Climate experts and Obama administration officials say that sea ice is disappearing due to global warming. Many say that the Arctic has been ice-free for the last few years.

James Hansen : ‘This is the last chance’

6/23/2008

“We see a tipping point occurring right before our eyes,” Hansen told the AP before the luncheon. “The Arctic is the first tipping point and it’s occurring exactly the way we said it would.”

Hansen, echoing work by other scientists, said that in five to 10 years, the Arctic will be free of sea ice in the summer.

The alarming loss of sea ice which has grown worse each summer over the past several decades, has taken a sharp turn for the worse: this year the loss is right in the middle, the most resilient part of the ice cover. This could lead to a completely ice-free Arctic Ocean by September.

I can’t wait for the celebrations! Surely Greenpeace is gearing up for a big party.

  2. Bruce says:

Goddamit, all the ice is gonna melt for sure soon unless you give us warmists control over your lives and this time we mean it! Any day now, I’m warning you. Make us your dictators, dammit! Your grandchildren will die otherwise, don’t you care about that?

  3. Alan A. says:

The press won’t mention it. The politicians will ignore it (if they are even told, which I doubt). So it’s all the same.

  4. Ken says:

Wait a minute. How do you know the warmists aren’t jacking with Antarctic sea ice data? For all we know, Bueno Aires is a few days away from being ice-bound.

  5. Brad says:

Settle down. The earth is still doomed. You see, I’ve read some other comments on other blogs. That’s just thin ice. Catastrophic Man Made Global Warming is going to melt all that thin ice that has been caused by fresh water melting under the Antarctic Ice Cap where it then flowed into the cold ocean where it is now freezing. So please, stay calm. Doomsday is still approaching. Do I have to be the only one to see things clearly around here?

    • Andy Oz says:

Exactly. There is no need to send rescue helicopters or ice breakers. The Guardian Stunt Team will be free soon. I mean, it’s not as if they had real jobs to go back to.

  6. norilsk says:

Help me. I’m melting. May 2014 be the final defeat of the global warmers. The Wicked Witch is Dead.

Hold on folks… There’s still a few hours left for the Arctic to be Ice-Free….

Perhaps that TRex shaped patch of boiling hot water will rise from the Ocean’s depths at 12:01… Melting the fragile Arctic…. Paul Beckwith knows…

  8. Psalmon says:

12/30 numbers show 11.5 Arctic and 6.9 Antarctic. Do we have a record? If so great timing while the world is tuned into the Clitanic drama.

    • Those are the December 28 numbers.

      • Junkster says:

I couldn’t find a link to the study from which the data came. I also was curious why summer ice is being measured on December 28th? It seems like all the links you provided are talking about summer ice in the arctic disappearing, and you have “disproved” them by posting a graph (with no citation) of ice surface area measured in the Northern Hemisphere’s Winter?

        • Reading is hard. Math is too.

        • Dear Junkster,

          Global.

          Sincerely yours.

        • Junkster says:

Each of the articles listed above specifically mentions Arctic summer ice. So, I get that the data presented are global ice. But how do ice levels on Dec 28th have anything to do with Arctic summers? It appears that there was a lot of surface area on Dec 28th, great, Doesn’t disprove the statement like this paraphrased from above the BBC news piece: models suggest the arctic ocean will be ice free during the summer in 5 to 7 years.

        • Junkster says:

I suppose the easiest way to put it is Mr. Goddard is using the wrong data set to disprove the articles he referenced in the blog. Using global data is wrong, and using data during the Arctic winter is also wrong. The data set he should present are the extent (or surface area, or some other measurement of ice) in the arctic ocean during summer in the Arctic. Sorry to upset you other folks.

        • Andy Oz says:

The Global Sea Ice extent is the second highest ( today its now the highest on record) for the date. Which part of that statement is causing you the problem, junkster?

        • What a load of crap.

        • Junkster says:

Andy Oz, I don’t dispute that the sea ice extent was high, or even a record on Dec 28th or Jan 2nd. But look at the headline from the BBC news article “Arctic Summers Ice Free By 2013”. Or the quote from Hansen “In 5 to 10 years the Arctic will be free of ice in the summer”. Or the Sierra club article “I don’t think any ice will survive this summer”. What does global sea ice extent on December 28th have to due with summer arctic ice?
As far as I can tell none of these people are actually saying “the arctic has been ice free for the last few years” as Mr. Goddard suggested. Instead, they were or are predicting that in the future or even in summer 2013 the arctic would be ice free in the summer.
If you want to prove that arctic ice is not disappearing during the summer, you need data showing some measure of arctic ice measured during the summer months. There is always melting and refreezing of sea ice with a maximum around February and then a minimum at the end of summer in the Northern Hemisphere. Data for ice in the northern hemisphere (as shown by Comiso 2012*) figure 1a, shows the decrease in arctic ice over the past 3 decades. Similar data for Arctic sea ice extent can be found here (http://nsidc.org/arcticseaicenews/) and here (http://www.forbes.com/sites/alexknapp/2013/09/21/2013-arctic-ice-extent-was-the-sixth-lowest-on-record/). The trend seems to agree with the predictions made in the articles cited above.

Gosh! 33 years out of 4,500,000,000! I’m convinced! Revert to the Stone Age immediately!

        • Junkster says:

Steven Goddard, You supported your suggestion that “many have been saying the arctic has been ice free for the past few years” with a 2009 quote from John Kerry in which he says “the Arctic will be ice-free in the summer of 2013”. How does the quote from John Kerry support your claim? If “many” are saying the arctic has been ice free for the past few years, why didn’t you quote one of the “many” saying exactly that, instead of John Kerry predicting a future summer where the arctic was ice free?

        • Junkster says:

Gator 69, Do we really need 4.5 billion years worth of data to see the current trend in Arctic ice? Certainly the current trend might be part of a larger natural warming trend, but that does not dispute the claim that summer Arctic ice has been decreasing, or does not prove that the Arctic might be ice free in the time frame suggested by the authors of the articles/studies noted above.

As for going back to the “stone age”. That is a a false dilemma. There is plenty of grey between now and the stone age.

        • gator69 says:

Glad we agree! Ice melts, and there is no need to wreck our economy.

Now that we have settled that, go feed some starving children.

        • Junkster says:

Gator69, we obviously don’t agree about the cause of the melting ice. You suggest that 33 years isn’t enough data to prove that global warming exists, but in your mind it is enough to prove that it doesn’t?

The only option for reducing greenhouse emissions is to “wreck our economy”?
          Isn’t that another false dilemma?

        • gator69 says:

Ice melts. Always has. It is as natural as the sunrise.

Legislating expensive energy is an economy buster. Are you thick?

        • Junkster says:

Gator69, Yes ice melts at a certain temperature and pressure. The rate of melting and the temperature in the Arctic are increasing, and most likely due to increased heat trapped by greenhouse gasses. Ask the Tuna industry if they would prefer to remove the mercury warnings from their products. I think the idea that any shift from fossil fuels is an “economy buster” is a meme concocted by the industries that have something to lose. Perhaps you could cite a detailed explanation of why moving away from fossil fuels necessarily destroys our economy. I hope that within that analysis externalities such as the Tuna industry, the association of asthma and other diseases with coal plant emissions etc. will be included.

Paying more for energy robs the economy of jobs and wealth.

          The End.

Can you let us know when the record is broken? It will be well-remembered if it does indeed happen today, 1st January 2014.

    Thanks

There is no logical reasons for reducing CO2, global temperatures are not linked to CO2 levels as proven by the evidence of data. Even the fact-blind egoist of the IPCC have conceded that.
The only reason to wreck the western economies through ‘carbon trading’ is the stupidity of socialism.
