Global warming creates Arctic shipping route opportunity

With the melting of sea ice due to global warming effects, the Arctic Ocean route, the shortest shipping route linking Europe and Asia, has opened up in the past few years, a MOL spokesman said.

What a wonderful idea – except for the fact that the Arctic Ocean is completely blocked with ice.
Pity that NSIDC provides no “Doofus Alert” not to try crossing it in a rowboat or canoe
Or on jet skies like a group tried last year.
Ah makes me nostalgic for those good-old days when a few utterly confused academics, assorted kooks, and of course publicity whores, opportunists and charlatans actually had the public believing the Arctic would be ice-free; and somehow that was “bad”.
How funny in retrospect.
Say, has anyone heard from Serraze lately?
Don’t know where to post this, but Phoenix just got an awesome, powerful monsoon.

It had hail too. Tomorrow, check out the rain gauge stats.
The last I read, he still believes in the death spiral.
Some people that believe the hype can get into serious trouble:
http://www.alaskadispatch.com/article/20140713/mariner-trying-sail-northwest-passage-rescued-after-sailboat-gets-stuck-sea-ice
“The mariner intends to sail to Barrow to resupply and await safer weather conditions before continuing his journey.”
I wonder how long the wait will be.
And something about the first article that struck me as being very funny…if the route is supposed to be ‘ice free’ then why are they…
“In a joint venture with China Shipping, it will use three icebreakers, which have been ordered from South Korea’s Daewoo. “
What they meant to say was that you can paddle a canoe along the north coast of Alaska
Which only an idiot would attempt; the current takes ice floes to the shore
Snorkeling the N.W. Passage may be best suited with a flotation device for your 10 gauge.
Hopefully they don’t forget the 1.75 ounce slugs 😉

To bad they don’t use their skills to examine data sets to show “The All-Women’s Team Demonstrates Global Warming is a Sickening Farce”
True, they wouldn’t get any awards from the Union of Concerned Scientists or NOAA.
Never underestimate the will and daring of desperate men. No sane ship master would ever go out with Chris Turney but Julia Gillard’s backers may splurge on a canoe. The professor has to do measurements.

Sure you can.
I think the writer of that linked story was being disingenuous, by not clarifying that the route he was describing is the NorthEast Passage which has had commercial shipping traffic on and off for the last 100 years. Not to be confused with the NorthWest passage. Some years requires heavy icebreaker support, others do not.
What I find staggering, is given the fragile state of sea ice in the Arctic that ice breakers should be allowed to smash through the sea ice and further damage the region. Where are the so called environmentalists trying to stop the boats from damaging what “remains” of the Northern ice.
Oh the hypocrisy of the left of which I used to belong!
+1
Here in Australia, Greens refuse to “Stop the Boats” of illegal immigrants. So they are entirely consistent with not stopping the boats in the Arctic, except the boats are fossil fuelled!! So they are pro fossil fuel and/or nuclear vessels as well as being anti carbon!
You have to twist your neck to get your brain around this but Greens can do it.
On the Northern passage side ( Siberia aka NE Passage ) that tongue of multiyear ice is going to be hard to melt, so I am not convinced that will be open this year.
For the NW passage it might be open but I think it will be tricky, mind you it is a warm week ahead. Won’t be open for long though if it is
Andy
According to Canada Ice Service, the NW Passage is blocked by fast ice. i.e. Ice all the way to the Ocean floor.

Yeah. Someone tried, and the Coast Guard had to come rescue them!
Maybe the volcano will kick in and make it look like they know what they are talking about, and melt the ice for them.So Gore can go around saying none of our children will see any snow again.
I wonder if this is anything to do with weather modification techniques, ‘polar vortex’s’ and jetstreams moving 1,000 miles south of where they should have been and in the case of the UK x5 major storms with pressure readings of less than 980?
Just a thought…
Maybe by “shipping” they didn’t mean boats, but rather tractor trailers?
I can just see it now: a perfect spin-off opportunity for Ice Road Truckers!
Ice Floe Truckers 😉
Well, the article does say they are bringing ice breakers. Time will tell if their plans succeed.
The Healy’s AloftCon webcam records the icebreaker’s (very gentle) approach up to the yacht here . . http://icefloe.net/Aloftcon_Photos/index.php?album=2014&image=20140712-2039.jpeg
That sea ice off Barrow is amazingly nasty and dirty!
