I would also like to remind everyone who reads this blog post that 1934 is the warmest year on record. Steve McIntyre found a problem with the GISS temperature code back in 2007 which put 1934 ahead of 1998 as far as hottest year ever. Following his revelation, the folks at GISS just used a different software program to deliver 1998 back to the hottest year on record. I want to remind everybody that the US is only 2% of the surface of earth so it’s only local. Now the Arctic, that covers 4% of the earth’s surface, so it’s global.

FOX News made the very specific claim “1934 Hottest Year on Record in U.S.” That’s the claim Media Matters were attempting to debunk, percent of Earth’s surface is irrelevant.
Really? In one minute of searching I found none other than James Hansen claiming (back in 1999, link below) that Goddard’s conclusion is perfectly correct, and it’s on the NASA website!

The point of the comment was to show that there has been significant manipulation of the surface temperature record. The fact that it was US data was well established in the article, and in the link. It would have been more appropriate (for you) to discuss the point of the comment which was the blatant manipulation of the surface temperature record.
The US being only 2% of the Earth’s surface is true; but it also has one of the better temperature histories (when not manipulated). If you take out UHI, data manipulation and an understanding of the PDO oscillation; you can only conclude that CAGW is a myth.

I believe until about 2009/10 or so, 1934 did hold the record. I remember watching it swept away with adjustments. Just sayin,,,,,,

Anthony Watts did his own analysis, independently of Steve Goddard, and also came to a conclusion that dodgy adjustments are happening with 1934 probably being the hottest year in the US but the data is so badly mangled no one knows any more. He also said this:

Among other things, the story contained the first printed reference to Paula Jones, referring to a woman named “Paula” who state troopers said offered to be Clinton’s partner. Jones called Brock’s account of her encounter with Clinton “totally wrong,” and she later sued Clinton for sexual harassment. OOPS! – Seem Brock might have made an enemy of the Clintons over that.

Something happened to Brock while Brock was gathering data to write that book on Hillary and I very much think his changing side was probably because he was given a choice he could not refuse. Remember at the same time “over one hundred suspects fled the country or refused to testify.” I think Brock might have stumbled onto something the Clintons wanted buried really really deep. Brock was a bit too high profile at the time AND INVESTIGATING the Clintons. Also it was a time when there were a lot of question marks about the Clintons so he was made an ‘offer’

Thanks the background on “Media Matters”. A tangled web of lies and fabrications indeed! I would be surprised if anyone other than Progressive Partisans pay it any attention.
I used to read a little of the MSM before Climategate 1.0 – I subscribed to Newsweek; Sci Am, Pop Sci and read a little more; oh, I stopped watching TV as a teenager. I just like to read and many of those magazines at least are nicely written and illustrated.
But I really expected MSM to do something on Climategate and was just getting into Climate blogs back then so was keeping up with the debate and the facts on the ground. I read Fuller and Mosh’s book (I still have a soft spot in my heart for Mosh because of that book!) and read numerous other books on the topic and on the topic of energy, environment, meteorology, even a supposed Climatology textbook – it was horribly vague and badly written and I tossed it; I wish I hadn’t so I could remember it’s title – it was published by Oxford University Press though.
Anyhow, I was eagerly awaiting MSM to blow the lid off on all the Climate scandals; this was back in 2009 with the Copenhagen debacle and all and really expected someone in MSM to take the ball and run with it. Crickets.
And that’s when I woke up. I realized the entire MSM were simply burying the story – burying the story of the most extensive scientific fraud in history. I began the process of cancelling (actually failing to renew…) all my subscriptions to magazines. If they were (and are) hiding the truth of Climategate, what other lies were they spreading? What else were they hiding?
Today I only subscribe to The American Conservative. I read blogs and check the numbers as best I can. Back a couple of years ago I started logging local temperatures myself. I suspend judgement on anything I can’t personally check.
When I stumble upon things like someone posting on Facebook Bernie Sanders’ (!) warning on out-of-control heating from Man-Made CO2; I realize the person is just a Progressive sympathizer, uninformed, uninterested in empirical facts, and being duped. People, generally, are not too bright – and that includes me! I forgive them that; but once they buy into a particular mythology like leftist Progressivism to their ignorance add close-mindedness.
It appears this outfit “Media Matters” is about as concerned with facts and truth as B.S. is concerned with climate. Ignorant, biased, propaganda, PR, nonsense.
Steven is a courageous soul to take on these frauds. It is simply amazing how pervasive the untruth is.
We were sold the bill of goods that the ‘Free Press’ was our watch dog for political corruption. However the MSM is not a ‘Free Press’ it was bought in 1915 by the J.P. Morgan interests and has remained the propaganda arm of the elite ever since.

Now Congress is floating ‘Net Neutrality’ bills. A bill is often named to mislead the public, so these bills are probably not about neutrality. I haven’t had the time to dig into the bills but at this point I figure anything coming out of DC esp under Obama is toxic to the general public.

People need to question things. Like asking what was the reason for the rise of the “Fact Checkers” in the first place? What void are they supposed to have filled after we got along without them for centuries? Leaving out the possible nefarious reasons, of which there are several, the only other possible reason they could have come into being in the first place is because the media does not do it’s job and has lost the credibility to persuade people that it is doing it’s job. IOW if the media were trusted and did do true journalism then there would never have been a void to fill by the “Fact Checkers”.

It’s not like it’s difficult to check what Tony has spotted and brought to our attention. Anyone can do it. The brilliance was in spotting it in the first place, but checking isn’t difficult and thus if anything were factually incorrect it would be a trivial exercise to expose it.

Watts is rapidly becoming the poster boy of the alarmists regarding the surface temperature record. He really needs to come out very strongly to stop the narrative about him spreading. These people have no scruples – you need to fight fire with fire.
As for ‘fabrication’, all this word means is that NOAA, BoM, etc are substituting man-made (fabricated) data for real data. It is an established fact (thanks Steve) that they are doing this, and Watts needs to come out loud and clear to denounce it.
Scientifically, there is never a good reason to ‘adjust’ the data. The data is what the data is, and there is no accepted scientific method for making it ‘higher quality’.
