Ouch! Yeah, I confess, I have some Progressive relatives as well, and it does indeed boggle the mind. Some of them are very bright — but only in a conventional sense. They are successful in life, etc., but they do not seem to have any depth in what they think. They are like the people in the Broken Window Paradox https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Parable_of_the_broken_window who see some minor benefit but never look even a little farther to see that the minor benefit comes with a major not-so-obvious cost. In many ways they are like very young children, but children playing with fire and gasoline. They never understand how they got burned, and so they automatically blame YOU.
Wiki actually did a decent analysis of the broken window fallacy. I am surprised.
Until it directly impacts this relative, there is no hope. Another one is a highly educated scientist, a proponent of everything AGW, Obama, and “it’s the damn Republicans fault”.

I want to know something…if everyone had an electric using car in the US, and we relied on solar and wind to generate electricity, how many people would be able to charge their cars?
Great question!
In reality, next to none. Electric rates with only wind and solar generated power would push the cost up so much that only the very wealthy could afford to pay for it. There is no way someone in the middle class would be able to afford home electricity because all of their income would be going to pay for food, the cost of which would also rise because it could only be transported on electric vehicles (of which only large multinational companies would likely be able to afford), and the coolers needed to keep the food from spoiling are going to take a large amount of the available electricity.
At a guess, the US would probably be able to sustain about the same level of electrification that we had in the 1920s. Maybe less.
The most important (and missing) bit of alternate energy schemes is still the lack of affordable, large scale,electrical storage.
