2009 Shock News : Multiyear Arctic Ice Is Gone!

Multiyear Arctic ice is effectively gone: expert

By David Ljunggren
OTTAWA | Thu Oct 29, 2009 12:01pm EDT

(Reuters) – The multiyear ice covering the Arctic Ocean has effectively vanished, a startling development that will make it easier to open up polar shipping routes, an Arctic expert said on Thursday.

Vast sheets of impenetrable multiyear ice, which can reach up to 80 meters (260 feet) thick, have for centuries blocked the path of ships seeking a quick short cut through the fabled Northwest Passage from the Atlantic to the Pacific. They also ruled out the idea of sailing across the top of the world.

But David Barber, Canada’s Research Chair in Arctic System Science at the University of Manitoba, said the ice was melting at an extraordinarily fast rate.

“We are almost out of multiyear sea ice in the northern hemisphere,” he said in a presentation in Parliament.

We Are From The Government – We Are Here To Protect You

The NYPD is releasing harmless gases into the subway system during the morning rush beginning Tuesday to study how chemical weapons could be dispersed through the air.

Researchers will track the movement of harmless tracer gases called perfluorocarbons.

The gases mimic how a chemical or biological weapon may react if released. They’ll be dispersed in low concentrations for 30 minutes only during the morning, city officials said.

That name rings a bell. They used perflourocarbons for making nuclear weapons

PFCs were developed for industry in the 1940s as part of the Manhattan project.

After a few years they are completely excreted from the body. PFCs are lipid soluble, but they are totally insoluble in water. This may be the reason that they remain in the body for longer periods of time.

Based on an analysis of the existing science, most notably documented in the IPCC Third Assessment Report (TAR), there is sufficient evidence to conclude that ….. perfluorocarbons (PFCs) ….. may constitute a danger to the environment on which life depends

Rowers Are Blocked By Ice

This animation shows why the rowers are pretending they are stuck in a storm. Over the weekend, ice blew on shore and blocked their route into the Canadian Archipelago.

We Are Making A Difference

Looks like word is getting out

not until last week, when I sat in on a lecture about climate change and wrote about its potential effects, did I discover how fervently opposed some people are to any admission that global warming exists. I’d describe them as hot under the collar, but that would steam them. They’re certain nothing on Earth is getting warmer.

“Global temperatures have not increased in the last 12 years,” one emailer wrote. “The hottest U.S. temps in recent history were in 1934.”

“Data is being manipulated to attempt to show warming,” another wrote. “The various model forecasts don’t hold up to actual conditions.”

And this: “Perhaps the greater question is why has there been such great effort to promote this factual untruth.”

There were several other messages, more colorful in tone, but they all boiled down to this: A slow-witted simpleton like me should not be allowed to express his opinion publicly. I’m fairly sure that was in reference to the climate change column, but they may have been thinking more generally.

Two of my correspondents identified themselves as Ph.D.s in engineering. One said he’d worked at Livermore Lab. Most emailers directed me to supporting online links, including one site that

listed more than 31,000 American scientists who oppose the 1997 Kyoto global warming agreement (petitionproject.org).

Their petition states: “There is no convincing scientific evidence that the human release of carbon dioxide, methane or other greenhouses gases is causing or will, in the foreseeable future, cause catastrophic heating of the Earth’s atmosphere and disruption of the Earth’s climate.” So there. End of debate.

Who knew people felt so passionately about climate theory?

Researchers Think That People Are Better Off Freezing To Death

China’s policy of providing free coal for winter heating to residents in the north has shaved 5.5 years off life expectancy in the region, a study says.

As opposed to letting them freeze to death, and cutting 55 years off their life expectancy.

It says air pollution from burning coal in the area north of the Huai River, with a population of some 500m people, was 55% higher than in the south.

How odd that people in warmer climates live longer.
