I have already discussed the first half of this paragraph, but now let’s focus on the second half. Until today, Hansen’s entire thesis has been based on polar amplification – where the poles heat more than the tropics. This reduces the temperature gradient between the poles and the equator.

Now Hansen is arguing the exact opposite – that the equator heats while the poles cool, causing a larger temperature gradient and more severe storms. The implication being that the past warming should have reduced severe storms.

The scientist also said he’s working on a paper based on “speculative” research that indicates accelerating ice loss from Greenland will eventually cause the North Atlantic to cool, creating the conditions for more powerful storms along the lines of Hurricane Sandy, the largest Atlantic hurricane on record.

Homer hasn’t quite worked out the feedback concept yet. If the North Atlantic, cools – then Greenland stops melting. Then the North Atlantic stops cooling.

Trenberth says that Sandy was caused by ocean warming, and now Hansen says it was caused by ocean cooling.
