Energy companies are lining up for their shot to drill in the Dakotas and Montana after a new government report revealed that a massive geological formation stretching across the states contains twice the oil and three times the amount of natural gas than was originally believed.

While the new estimate is drawing smaller companies to the game, the larger players like Schlumberger, Halliburton and Continental Resources are pushing forward with ambitious multi-year plans to stake their claim in the industry.

Continental recently announced a five-year plan to triple its production by 2017. The company’s growth is based on success in North Dakota and Montana as well as in parts of Oklahoma.

At the two-thirds mark for meteorological spring, 2013 was the second coldest spring on record – slightly warmer than 1975.

But 1975 had an unusually warm May at 17C. The two warmest months of May were in 1934 and 1896.

The forecast for the first two weeks of May is well below normal, so odds are that the spring of 2013 will be the coldest on record in the US.  This is what Fort Collins looked like at 7pm today (May 1.)

This is what the early spring looks like in my neighborhood today. The only thing that saved us from a huge mess is it has been so cold, the leaves have not come out yet on the Cottonwood trees. Normally they appear near the end of March.

Obama and the Congressional left reject the idea of putting security guards in schools, even though their own children are protected by security guards in their schools.

Rather than placing someone with a gun in the schools to protect the children, they say that children should call someone else with a gun (police) who take 20 minutes to arrive. In the meantime six year olds are told to defend themselves with ball point pens.

The Longview school district will join a nationwide group that identifies students who could become violent and tracks them throughout their education — regardless of where they move.

Longview ISD officials said Wednesday the district will participate in the Student Safety National Alliance starting in the 2013-14 school year.

“What we are offering and introducing to you today is the Walmart for student safety and security,” said interim district Superintendent James Wilcox.

About 70 school administrators and campus police officers from 25 school districts attended a school safety conference at the district’s education safety center to learn about the alliance.

“We’re here because of what happened at Sandy Hook. If we weren’t having these catastrophic acts, we wouldn’t be here,” Korem told school officials Wednesday.

None of the desperate measures being implemented in the name of Sandy Hook would have had any impact on what happened there. The one thing which would have saved those kids was a security guard, and they absolutely refuse to discuss that.

As global warming experts would explain, all of the cold air and snow is due to the fact that fossil fuel powered warm air holds more moisture. Or missing Arctic ice. Or Chinese aerosols. Or Heat sinking to the bottom of the ocean. Or they haven’t had a chance to adjust the temperatures yet. Or 97% of experts say that it is not snowing …..

We are celebrating the first day of May with 20 inches of snow in Fort Collins.

1975 was the last (and only) time the US had a spring this cold. At the time, people were smart enough to recognize that it was due to global cooling.

In 1974, America was smart enough to get rid of the crook in the White House. In 2013, we just re-elected a much worse one. If Americans want to behave like the stupidest people on the planet, we can fully expect to reap the rewards.
