As the Antarctic ice begins to disappear, penguins are at risk: in some areas one species has declined by a stunning 90 percent. NBC’s Kerry Sanders reports from Antarctica.

Emperor penguins in Antarctica are far more plentiful than previously thought, a study that used extremely high-resolution imagery snapped by satellites has revealed.

“It surprised us that we approximately doubled the population estimate,” said Peter Fretwell, a scientist with the British Antarctic Survey and lead author of a paper published Friday in the journal PLoS One.

Hundreds of heavily-armed Australian police have taken part in raids on biker gangs in and around Sydney.

Several high-ranking members of the gangs were arrested and explosives, guns, drugs and cash were seized.

Some 350 police took part in dawn raids at 30 addresses across Sydney and elsewhere in New South Wales state targeting the Hells Angels, Rebels and Comancheros, as well as Asian and Balkan crime organisations, police said.

They confirmed “a senior member of the Hells Angels” was among 19 people arrested during the raids, in which ammunition, a stun gun and a bullet-proof vest were also recovered.

ST. LOUIS — Recent rain and snowstorms have eased the grip of the worst U.S. drought in decades in portions of the nation’s midsection, swelling some major inland rivers to near flood stage and drenching some farmland enough to possibly delay fast-approaching spring planting.

The National Weather Service said Monday the [Mississippi] river was at 24.3 feet in Clarksville, Mo. — less than a foot below technical flood stage — and expected to rise to nearly 2 feet above flood stage by Wednesday. Clarksville is about 70 miles north of St. Louis.

Something seems to have finally clicked over at the Guardian, as they are slamming Obama every day now.

The White House has denied that Barack Obama is sending out mixed messages on the eve of three days of visits to Congress to discuss budgets, immigration, guns and climate change.

Obama has meetings scheduled with Republicans and Democrats on Capitol Hill on Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday, a charm offensive billed by the White House as an attempt to woo Republicans – and some Democrats – opposed to his tax and spending plans, as well as other proposed second-term legislative proposals.

But he has also scheduled a speech on Wednesday night at a conference in Washington of Organising for Action, Obama’s campaign group, which has been reformed to mobilise public opinion behind his agenda.

Scheduling the Organising for Action speech in the same week as his congressional charm offensive risks raising suspicions among Republicans that Obama is just going through the motions of seeking a compromise on the budget and other issues. They worry that his real objective is purely political: to portray the Republicans are obstructionist and hope they are punished in the congressional midterms in 2014.
