I was wrong about the Climate Change Act
My biggest regret as an MP is that I failed to oppose the 2008 Climate Change Act. It was a mistake. I am sorry.
On the very day the Labour government passed this fatuous attempt to “stop global warming”, it was, if I remember rightly, snowing. Had I opposed the Bill, it wouldn’t have made much difference, but I feel I should have known better.
Unlike much of the gesture legislation that goes through Parliament, this law has turned out to have real consequences. The Climate Change Act has pushed up energy prices, squeezing households and making economic recovery ever more elusive.
The aim of the Climate Change Act was to create a low carbon economy. I fear the Act will do that, but perhaps not the way intended. The Climate Change Act is giving us a low carbon economy the way that pre-industrial Britain had a low carbon economy.

The Hurricane of 1900 made landfall on September 8, 1900, in the city of Galveston, Texas, in the United States.[1] It had estimated winds of 145 miles per hour (233 km/h) at landfall, making it a Category 4 storm on the Saffir–Simpson Hurricane Scale.[2] It was the deadliest hurricane in US history, and the second costliest hurricane in U.S. history based on the dollar’s 2005 value (to compare costs with those of Hurricane Katrina and others).
People drive their car five miles to get to the supermarket. They purchase large amounts of products wrapped in plastic and styrofoam. Then they check out, and the cashier informs them that the store has discontinued their thin plastic bags -in an effort to save the planet. Instead the groceries get bagged in a thin paper bag, which is just a destructive to the environment. The shopper then burns another quarter of a gallon of gas driving home, their paper bag breaks in the driveway breaking glass and eggs, and the shopper feels good that he didn’t destroy the planet.
I do my commuting and shopping on a bicycle with a backpack, but I don’t have any illusions that what I am doing is sustainable. I just like to ride a bike – and save money.
Ban the sale of guns and begin gun registration. This will do nothing to deter criminals, and will lead to an increase in crime – which will then become the excuse to pass further laws and start confiscation.
Confiscation will be much easier once they have the registration database.
