Extending The Gun Ban – For The Public Good

Rifles killed 323 people last year in the US, so they must be confiscated. Hammers killed 600 people last year, so they must all be confiscated. Cars killed 35,000 people last year, so they must all be confiscated. Doctors killed 190,000 people last year with poor diagnoses, so doctors must be banned. Penises were used in tens of thousands of rapes last year, so all penises must be confiscated. Millions of people died as a result of what they ate, so food must be banned. Electricity killed many people last year, as did skis, water and Muslims.

All these things must be banned – for our own good. Now you are thinking like a good liberal (except for the Muslim part.)

Engineering For Success

My politically correct post for the day.

The gym where I workout is extremely well planned. The weights are behind the aerobics equipment, so while you are lifting you have a great view of women in spandex climbing steps on the stairmaster. This provides excellent motivation for frequent long, hard workouts.

NOAA Defines Beautiful Weather As Extreme

NOAA claims that 2012 was the second most extreme weather in US history, despite a record low tornado count and the longest stretch since the Civil War without a major hurricane.

They accomplished this by defining mild weather as extreme. I spent last winter in Maryland, and the weather was picture perfect. But NOAA says that last winter was the third most extreme winter in northeastern US history.

U.S. Climate Extremes Index

NOAA is driven by politics, and their climate science has become a complete joke. Their predecessors described their behavior as a crime against the community.

Worse Than They Expected

A few weeks ago NRDC told us that western skiing was doomed due to excessive heat and lack of snow. This can be easily seen at Wolf Creek, Colorado where the current temperature at 1:30 pm  is -13F.

A Remarkable 2012 Statistic

One statistic about 2012 which caught my attention was the huge ratio of record maximums to record minimums, which blew away the previous records set in 1998 and 1939. The reason that the 2012 had such a high average temperature was because of the absence of cold weather.

2013 seems to be making up for the previous year – with record cold out here in the west.

2012 Was The Second Hottest Year In The US After 1934

[Correction : the graph below is only for maximum temperatures. Average temperatures in 2012 were indeed warmer than 1934.]

The final data is in, and a apples to apples comparison (using only the same set of all 821 GHCN HCN stations continuously active since at least 1920) shows that 2012 was slightly cooler than 1934, shows that 2012 was 0.4F warmer than 1934, but the trend since 1920 is downwards. The US has been cooling for 90 years.

2012 was an anomaly, not the new normal.

Prior to tampering by NOAA and GISS, 1934 was always the hottest year.

Whither U.S. Climate?

By James Hansen, Reto Ruedy, Jay Glascoe and Makiko Sato — August 1999

What’s happening to our climate? Was the heat wave and drought in the Eastern United States in 1999 a sign of global warming?

Empirical evidence does not lend much support to the notion that climate is headed precipitately toward more extreme heat and drought. The drought of 1999 covered a smaller area than the 1988 drought, when the Mississippi almost dried up. And 1988 was a temporary inconvenience as compared with repeated droughts during the 1930s “Dust Bowl” that caused an exodus from the prairies, as chronicled in Steinbeck’s Grapes of Wrath.
