Millions and millions of Americans have built homes and businesses just above sea level, along the Eastern and Gulf Coast seaboards.

The west coast is much safer, because they don’t have hurricanes.

Suppose that some snake oil salesman named Hames Jansen had been running around the country in 1886 claiming that he could prevent hurricanes by having everyone give up coal and oil.

The consequences would have been catastrophic, had people been stupid enough to listen to Dr. Hames Jansen.

So why are people in 2012 stupid enough to listen to snake oil salesman James Hansen?
