The Great Hurricane of 1780, also known as the Hurricane San Calixto II, is the deadliest Atlantic hurricane on record. Well over 25,000 people died when the storm passed through the Lesser Antilles in the Caribbean between October 10 and October 16. The hurricane struck Barbados with wind gusts possibly exceeding 320 km/h (200 mph), before moving past Martinique, Saint Lucia, and Sint Eustatius; thousands of deaths were reported on each island. Coming in the midst of the American Revolution, the storm caused heavy losses to British and French fleets contesting for control of the area. The hurricane later passed near Puerto Rico and over the eastern portion of the Dominican Republic, causing heavy damage near the coastlines, and ultimately turned to the northeast before being last observed on October 20 southeast of Cape Race, Newfoundland.

Complaints include what seems to the scientists a willful omission of overwhelming evidence the new droughts and floods are worsened by man made global warming, and unquestioning repetition, gullible at best, of transparent anti-science propaganda credibly reported to be funded by fossil fuel interests and anti-regulation allies.

Even during this hot summer, when inescapable bad news about the warming climate from around the United States and the world has forced its way into main stream media coverage, it has usually been reported only in a reactive and literal event-coverage sort of way.

According to USHCN raw data, the summer of 2012 was the sixteenth hottest in the US. Much cooler than 1936, 1934 and 1901. Parts of Alaska and and Australia were near record cold over the past few months.

The reason that people use landfalling hurricanes as an historical measure, is because they didn’t have satellites and radar to detect peak one minute wind speeds at altitude in the middle of the Atlantic during the 19th century. Does Mandia think that Hurricanes are now steering clear of land just to help climate deniers? Is he actually as stupid as he pretends to be?

During recent years, there have been a number of Category 4 hurricanes that might have only been classified as weak hurricanes or even tropical storms if they had taken place at the same location during the late 1940s and early 1950s.

Last year as Irene made landfall, I posted that it did not have hurricane force winds. My post made Drudge and I got thousands of flame comments from warmists who insisted that Irene was the worst hurricane in history.

A year later, leading hurricane alarmist Kerry Emanuel has acknowledged that Irene was not a hurricane at landfall.

Last year, Irene was just a tropical storm when it made landfall, but caused immense damage and injury mostly owing to flash floods caused by intense rain.
