A number of key climate related satellites went into service in 1979, which coincidentally was the coldest year since the 1920s in the US (according to USHCN raw data)  and also the year of peak Arctic ice. This has caused satellite temperature and Arctic  ice trends to be unrepresentative of the long term patterns, and allowed them to be used as propaganda. It also occurred shortly before the eruptions of El Chichon and Mt. Pinatubo, which further dragged temperatures down.

Further aggravating the problem is that NSIDC chooses to not report satellite data prior to 1979, which inconveniently shows that there was a lot less Arctic ice in 1974 than there was in 1979.

but they don’t show what happened during the five years prior to 1979.

Satellites are a useful tool, but it would be nice to have an honest discussion about the severe limitations of the data set.

The best historical analog is a relatively recent one, said Michael Brewer, a physical scientist at NOAA’s National Climatic Data Center.

“This year actually looks a lot like 1988,” he said. “A summer-onset drought that hit in the Corn Belt, with conditions that came on and deteriorated rapidly, with big impacts to the agricultural community.”

That drought caused an estimated $40 billion in agriculture losses — $78 billion in today’s dollars. But it lasted only a year.

“That’s very different than the droughts of the ’30s and ’50s,” Brewer said. “The drought in the ’30s was almost 10 years long. In the ’50s, depending on where you were, it was anywhere from a few years to six to eight.

Though scientists have not fully analyzed the causes of the current drought, Brewer said it is “consistent with what we’d expect under climate change.”

“You’re going to see more extremes,” he said. “When it rains, it rains harder. But it means there is potential to go with longer periods of time between rain.”

Brilliant thinking. He is saying the drought is less extreme than past ones, and that is consistent with more extreme weather due to climate change.

While they are at it, they should throw everyone in Washington in jail for ignoring the threat of running multi-trillion dollar deficits.

When NCDC makes their fraudulent claim in the next couple of days that July 2012 was the hottest on record in the US, here is the formula for correcting their data back to the actual temperature.

Recent July data tampering has been pushing the temperatures up by about 0.7F. They also have been knocking about 0.4F off of 1930s temperatures. The formulas are :

Actual July 2012 temperature = NCDC 2012 July temperature – 0.7F

Actual July 1936 temperature = NCDC 1936 July temperature + 0.4F

These adjustments will get you in the ballpark of the actual temperatures and allow you to make historical comparisons – rather than the phony political comparison which the Ministry Of Truth wants you to make.
