There is clearly a much bigger story with James Holmes. He was under the guidance of the University of Colorado studying “temporal illusion” – and the judge has issued a gag order on anyone discussing the case.

There was a time when the US was different from the Soviet Union, though it is difficult to remember now.
Jay Zwally (of ice-free Arctic in 2012 fame) is back at it. Look at what he told Fox News :
NASA chief cryospheric scientist H. Jay Zwally told FoxNews.com that the melting has been increasing as the temperatures in Greenland have been increasing.
“Climate in the Arctic has been warming about three to four times more than the global average, and Greenland surface temperatures (observed by satellite and surface instruments) have been increasing about 2 degrees Celsius per decade during about the last 20 years,” he said.

Why did he pick the last 20 years? Because twenty years ago was the coldest period on record in Greenland.

Top scientist Zwally forgot to mention that current temperatures are cooler than the 1930s and that the long term trend since the 1920s is downward.

This week, after reviewing his own new data, NASA climate scientist Jay Zwally said: “At this rate, the Arctic Ocean could be nearly ice-free at the end of summer by 2012, much faster than previous predictions.”
According to USHCN raw daily data, January 1930 to December 1939 was the hottest decade in US history, and averaged 54.02 degrees F.
By contrast, the 120 months from March 1976 to February 1985 was the coldest ten year period on record in the US, and averaged 52.59 degrees.
From the graph below, it becomes abundantly clear why, Hayhoe, Hansen, Dessler at al normally cherry pick the 1970s as their start date for climate data, and why Hansen has worked so hard to beat down the 1930s.
There has been very little change in the number of hurricanes over the last 50 years, but the number of named storms has doubled.
Also the ratio of named storms to hurricanes has increased by nearly 50%. By naming more clouds, NOAA can declare a record hurricane season every year – even if there weren’t any hurricanes.
NASA is obsessed with three or four of hours when temperatures got barely above freezing.

This is what melting ice in Greenland looks like. There is a 100 mile wide strip on the southwest coast of Greenland which is covered with dirt and soot and is melting. It does this ever summer.

The rest of the ice sheet (95% +) is zinc-oxide white, and is not melting. The demarcation line between melting and not melting is very clear.
When these experts talk about unprecedented melting, you can be pretty certain that they either didn’t pass third grade or they are spewing propaganda rather than science.
Bookmark this – it is important.
The graph below plots the correlation between raw USHCN maximum temperatures and Briffa’s trees from 1960-1994. Those are the trees which Mann threw out when he did his nature trick. The correlation is pretty decent (rsq=0.103) considering that the USHCN data only covers the US. The USHCN anomalies are calculated vs. the average raw maximum temperature from 1895-2011.
The next graph shows the weaker correlation (rsq=0.066) between GISS US adjusted temperatures and Briffa’s trees from 1960-1994.
Here are the adjustments which Hansen has made to the US data vs. what he published in 1999. (Note how they look just like a hockey stick.)
This shows us two things.
This is an amazing story. Hansen made incorrect adjustments to the data. Mann looked at the incorrect adjustments and decided to throw out the tree ring data – because they didn’t match the incorrect adjustments. Then Mann replaced the correct tree ring data with the incorrectly adjusted data – based on the belief that a rise from 318 to 319 PPM CO2 had somehow corrupted the trees’ ability to function properly.
The USHCN data I have been plotting for the entire US has a warming bias to it. The density of USHCN stations is higher in the northeast, where there has been a warming trend.
By contrast, Texas has a much lower density of stations, and shows a cooling trend.
If the stations were area weighted, we would likely see an even stronger cooling trend in the US – which already looks more like Texas than New Jersey.
Hansen is more scientific about this. He heavily weights the high Arctic region (which is about the size of the US) where he has no thermometers.
