Scientists who claim that huge sea level rises will occur in some places – but not others – are simply flaming morons. Water is a fluid. If the WAIS “collapses” and raises sea level by two metres, then sea level will rise by two metres everywhere.

The reason we see discrepancies in sea level data now are because the numbers we are working with are small. One place may have 3 mm of rise while another place may have 3 mm of fall, due to thermal expansion, wind, instrument error, subsidence, etc.

If we saw an actual sea level rise of thousands of millimetres, it would be nearly uniform across the planet. Try making the water at one end of your swimming pool stay higher than at the other end.

People are getting PhD’s in science from universities, while lacking science skills needed to graduate high school.

As the world continues to warm from climate change, most of California — including San Francisco Bay and Monterey Bay — will see a greater rise in sea level than other parts of the planet, according to a prominent national study released Friday.

California has shown little or no change in sea level for decades. It is one of the most stable places on the planet.

The report, from the National Academy of Sciences, found that the impacts of melting ice and warming, expanding oceans will hit California harder because most of the state’s coast line is slowly sinking due to geological forces. Ocean levels south of Humboldt County will rise up to 1 foot in the next 20 years, 2 feet by 2050, and up to 5 feet by 2100, the study showed.

San Francisco Bay already has risen roughly 7 inches in the past 100 years, as measured by the tidal gauge at Fort Point, under the Golden Gate Bridge.

All of that seven inches occurred prior to 1980. Since 1980, there has been zero sea level rise measured at the Fort Point tide gauge. See the graph below.

“We shouldn’t be debating this any more,” said Gary Griggs, a coastal geologist at UC Santa Cruz who served on the committee that issued the 274-page report. “Let’s start thinking realistically about the future, and plan so we minimize our losses.”

The thing we should be discussing is how to purge the scientific community of junk science.

At risk over the next generation: low-lying areas such as San Francisco and Oakland airports, Treasure Island, Alviso in San Jose and low-lying communities such as Foster City and Redwood Shores, particularly during winter storms at high tide.

Tide gauges and satellite measurements along the California coast show that sea level has either not changed, or has gone down over the last twenty years. Claims of rapid sea level rise over the next twenty years are fraudulent.

The graph below shows the tide gauge data discussed in the article. The trend is dead flat for thirty years, and they are claiming 300 mm of rise in the next twenty years.

There is no reason to expect any sea level rise in California over the next 20 years, much less the large numbers being claimed in this study. We are dealing with a bunch of blatant fraudsters.

Last year, tornadoes were proof of global warming. This year they aren’t important.

According to data from the Storm Prediction Center, the count of preliminary tornado reports during May — 139 — was much below the 1991-2010 average of 276. May is typically the most active tornado month during the year. This marks the slowest May, in terms of the number of tornadoes since 2005, when 124 tornadoes were confirmed. Once the final tornado count is confirmed, it is likely the May 2012 count will be revised lower.

The term “the Obama Phone” has been all around since the day Barack Obama became the president of the United States of America. Many people think that Obama is giving free cellphones to the poor in order to redistribute the wealth of rich people. Since then two groups are mudslinging at each other.  It’s true that government provides free cellphones to the poor and disabled people.

But the Obama part is not true as Obama didn’t initiate this program. It’s on the run since the administration of Reagan.  This program has two parts: one is called the ‘Link-Up’ which provided free landline connection to the poor and the other is called the ‘Lifeline’ which provides waiver on telephone bills. These two programs are simply called ‘Lifeline’ when lumped together.

Obama splatters his name every fourth word on the website (which also bears his name) then admits that the Obama part is not true. He is running a campaign program using taxpayer money, lying about it, and taking credit for Reagan’s accomplishments.

When you elect a third world banana republic dictator, that is exactly what you get.

There have been several comments on this blog recently claiming that the consensus agreed with plate tectonics, but disagreed with continental drift.

This is revisionist nonsense, as I will explain below the offending comment.

In the case of continental drift, it took almost 70 years to accept the evidence, and allow the science to proceed.

The continental drift hypothesis – continents moving across the sea floor like ships upon the sea – was wrong, and rightly rejected (no one rejected the obvious fact that continents fit together like a jigsaw puzzle). As a physical mechanism to explain the fact that the continents do fit together, it was simply impossible and scientists at the time for the most part recognized that it was impossible. Wegener was unable to answer the “how do they move?” response to his hypothesis.

Despite this, there was actually fairly considerable acceptance, especially in Europe, that the coincidences of geographical fit, various fits of rock types and fossils, meant that some unknown mechanism had caused the continents to move, emphasis on the “unknown”. But science likes explanations, and it’s understandable that continental drift didn’t gain widespread acceptance given that its proponents couldn’t propose a physically possible mechanism for it.

Plate tectonics is not continental drift. And it came about due to the discovery of sea floor spreading, which came about as a result of improved mapping of the ocean floors using modern technology, in the 1950s. Once a reasonable mechanism was discovered and the theory of plate tectonics developed, acceptance was relatively rapid.

The reddish color is actually the sunset through the smoke, not fire.

I posted the map below on June 8 showing how Fort Collins had narrowly missed heavy rain. In the preceding days we had been under repeated tornado watches. Areas to the north and south received as much as eight inches of rain during the previous week, but Fort Collins got none.

No one realized at that time that lightning had started a fire inside that red circle. The next day, the winds picked up and the fire grew very quickly.

The fire was the result of a weird weather pattern in a tiny area of Colorado. So of course it is being blamed on global warming.

Global warming may push sea levels as much as a foot higher in California in the next two decades, threatening airports, freeways, ports and houses, according to a report examining risks along the U.S. West Coast.

Increases are forecast to be greatest south of Cape Mendocino, with levels rising 1.5 inches to 12 inches (4 to 30 centimeters) by 2030 and as much as two feet by 2050, according to a report today by the National Research Council. In Oregon and Washington, increases may be more modest, because land also is rising

Satellites show no sea level rise off the coast of California since they started taking measurements twenty years ago. Satellite measurements are unaffected by changes in the height of the land surface, because they are measured relative to the satellite’s orbit rather than the coastline.
