This drought may never break

IT MAY be time to stop describing south-eastern Australia as gripped by drought and instead accept the extreme dry as permanent, one of the nation’s most senior weather experts warned yesterday.

“Perhaps we should call it our new climate,” said the Bureau of Meteorology’s head of climate analysis, David Jones.

A controversy is churning over projections for sea-level rise through the end of this century and whether they should be used in drafting development policies along the coast today.

Draft legislation circulating among state lawmakers, lobbyists and advocacy groups would prohibit state and local government agencies from using projections of accelerated sea rise – due mainly to global warming and the melting of polar ice caps – when forming coasting development policies and regulations.

If enacted as written, the measure would require rates of sea-level rise to be determined using historical data “limited to the time period following the year 1900,” but not “scenarios of accelerated rates of sea level rise.”

It is a response to a controversial 2010 report by the N.C. Coastal Resources Commission’s Science Panel on Coastal Hazards, which recommended that a sea-level rise of 39 inches, or 1 meter, be adopted as the amount of anticipated rise by the year 2100 for policy development and planning purposes. The report noted that there is consensus among scientists that the rate of rise will increase this century and beyond.

This report is a total fraud. The IPCC projects 7-24 inches of sea level rise.

The legislation, in effect, would ensure the findings of the report aren’t reflected in coastal management policies.

Rep. Pat McElraft, R-Carteret, who is pushing the proposal, said she wants to ensure that historical data, not projections, are used when estimating sea-level rise. She said she doesn’t believe the estimates from the science panel’s report.

Coastal Louisiana is subsiding more than 5mm per year. Hansen tells us that we can stop this by limiting CO2 to the safe level it was at when the 1988 Yellowstone fire occurred.

“We should be aiming to keep CO2 no higher than about 350ppm and possibly somewhat less. That is probably necessary if we want to maintain stable ice sheets and shorelines and avoid many other issues.”

The state of scientific knowledge in 2012 is far better than it was in the 1970s.

In the 1970s NASA sent men to the moon. Now we have morons at NASA predicting the imminent drowning of Manhattan, and super El Ninos every other year.

I actually have a serious proposal which is that we have to get a bunch of scientists to tell us that we’re facing a threatened alien invasion, and in order to be prepared for that alien invasion we have to do things like build high-speed rail. And the, once we’ve recovered, we can say, “Look, there were no aliens.”

But look, I mean, whatever it takes because right now we need somebody to spend, and that somebody has to be the U.S. government.

The second named storm of this unusually fast-starting 2012 Atlantic hurricane season is here. Subtropical Storm Beryl formed Friday night, a few hundred miles east of the South Carolina coast, from an area of disturbed weather that had moved from the Western Caribbean northeastward. Beryl’s formation marks the first time since the hurricane season of 1908 that two Atlantic named storms have formed so early in the year. The only other year with two storms so early in the year was 1887. Records of tropical cyclones in the Atlantic extend back to 1851.

Translation : the dearth of hurricanes in recent years has forced NOAA to become very aggressive at naming storms. 1908 was one of Hansen’s ten coldest years, so this has nothing to do with global warming
