National Climate Assessment

“the warmest daily temperature of the year increased in some parts of the West over the past century (Figure 6.3), but there were decreases in almost all locations east of the Rocky Mountains. In fact, all eastern regions experienced a net decrease (Table 6.2), most notably the Midwest (about 2.2°F [1.2°C]) and the Southeast (roughly 1.5°F [0.8°C]). The decreases in the eastern half of Nation, particularly in the Great Plains, are mainly tied to the unprecedented summer heat of the 1930s Dust Bowl era”

COVID Fatigue In Los Alamos

My home town of Los Alamos, New Mexico is the best educated and healthiest city in the US.  I used to travel there every month, but their COVID superstitions made visiting the place nearly intolerable. Last October friends and family refused to meet with us because we were uninjected and face-diaperless. One long-time friend said I “had no soul” because I wasn’t supporting Pfizer. I felt this was unfair, because my tax dollars were going directly to Pfizer’s bottom line, just like everybody else.

Los Alamos seems determined to keep the misery going as long as possible.

Biden Making Coal Ubiquitous Again

Biden says high energy prices are part of an “incredible transition” to lead the world away from fossil fuels.

Meanwhile back in the real world, the head of the International Energy Agency says Europe needs to fire up their coal fired power plants.

“Birol said emergency measures taken by European countries this week to reduce gas demand, such as firing up old coal-fired power stations, were justified by the scale of the crisis despite concerns about rising carbon emissions.”

Last summer Birol said it was essential to get rid of coal by the end of 2021.

I took this picture near Los Alamos on June 16, 1977 shortly after the La Mesa fire started.

I used to eat lunch most days sitting on this bridge in Frijoles Canyon, but flash flooding after that fire washed the bridge away.  The picture below is the rebuilt version.

The 1977 drought was blamed on global cooling.

“There Is some evidence that the world is headed Into another deep Ice age, possibly like the one which produced the extensive glaciers of 18,000 yearn ago. “There’s disagreement over our position today,” Lamb said In an Interview following his lecture. “The cooling we see could be related to previous episodes,” meaning those who predict another great ice age are correct. On the other hand, Lamb said, man’s Influence — which has already changed the climates of our cities — could overcome the cooling” “There’s almost no evidence that man’s efforts have had much effect up to now.”

Brown Warns of Drought Disaster; Says ‘Hard Choices’ Face California – The New York Times

“The current drought affecting Montana and other western states is the result of a world climatic cooling and drying trend, Sen. Bob Brown, R-Whitefish said this week.

Brown, Sen. John Manley, D- Drummond, and Rep. Joe Kanduch, D-Anaconda, were briefed on the drought by Dr, Pierre St. Amand at a recent meeting in San Francisco, Calif., of state legislators representing Montana, Idaho, Washington, Oregon and California.

St. Amand, director of Earth and Planetary Science Studies for the U. S. Navy Department, is widely regarded as one of the world’s leading experts in the field of weather modification, Brown said.

Enlarging of polar ice masses and the worldwide drying trend is evidence of a global cooling process, St. Amand told the lawmakers.

History shows that the earth has gone through cooling and warming cycles over time and that man can take steps to deal with the current situation in an intelligent manner, St. Amand said.”

Severe Ancient Droughts: A Warning to California – The New York Times

The Washington Post wants to declare CO2 to be a toxin.

The greatest expansion of life on Earth occurred 540 million years ago, when CO2 was at its peak. Atmospheric CO2 levels were more than 15 times higher than they are now. Corals and shellfish evolved during that time.  If ocean acidification was a real problem, there would have been no sea life, rather than a massive expansion of life in the oceans..

Carbon Dioxide Fertilization Greening Earth, Study Finds | NASA

“Fertilizing the air with carbon dioxide to promote plant growth

ONE of the principal constituents making up the body of a plant is carbon, representing about one-half of its organic substance. The opinion that this carbon is derived from the soil has long been abandoned, modern investigation having shown atmospheric carbonic acid to be absorbed by means 0f the chlorophyll 0r green matter of the leaves and decomposed into its elements, the carbon, in conjunction with the root sap and atmospheric m0isture, being worked into organic compounds.

Whereas atmospheric air at present is relatively poor in carb0nic acid, of which it contains only about .03 per cent, at an early period in the development of our planet, when this was covered with the luxuriant forests our coal deposits are derived from, it comprised incomparably greater quantities of this gas. This fact suggested the idea of heightening the fertility of the soil by increasing its carbonic acid content and thus producing conditions resembling those of antediluvian ages.”
