Fit or Fat?

http://tackytouristphotos.com/wp-content/uploads/2009/10/Tacky-Tourist-Costume.jpg

When traveling around the UK, one thing that really stands out is the disparity between the city and the country. People in London tend to be much healthier looking (except for the American tourists.) Out in the country, people tend to be overweight. How come?

I assume it is because of lifestyle. People in London walk and take mass transit. People who live in the countryside usually drive cars to work and the pub. When I am in London, I usually find myself walking at least five miles a day between tube stations and wherever I am trying to get.

I have a childhood friend who lives in a rural area of South Wiltshire. His house is a mile from the pub along a footpath. It is a fantastic walk, and great fun navigating home at night after a few pints!

Rooney Gets His Goal

http://www.guardian.co.uk/football/2010/aug/30/manchester-united-west-ham-united-premier-league

After 150 scoreless days, Wayne Rooney finally got his goal. Of course it took a bad call by the referee and a penalty kick to avoid six scoreless months. At £90,000 a week, that works out to £1,928,571 per goal.

Boxing Match in California

http://www.nbcbayarea.com/news/politics/Boxer-Fiorina-Trade-Barbs-in-First-Debate-102059363.html

One of many big differences between the two candidates is their position on state Proposition 23. The measure on the November ballot would suspend Assembly Bill 32, also known as the Global Warming Solutions Act, which was signed by Gov. Schwarzenegger in 2006 and would bring California into compliance with the provisions of the Kyoto Protocol.

Fiorina described AB32 as “a job killer in the short term” because of the heavy regulations it imposes, but she refused to say how she would vote on Proposition 23. Instead, she said, “My focus is on a comprehensive national energy policy.”

Boxer said AB32 is a “crucial bill” and that if it is suspended, China and other countries will take the lead in solar energy and other clean  energy programs.

I get it now. Passing oppressive tax laws will create jobs.

Popular Science – Taxes are “Nice”

Gotta love how these folks think …..

Lomborg’s forthcoming book, Smart Solutions to Climate Change, declares that global warming is “undoubtedly one of the chief concerns facing the world today.” He examines eight methods to reduce or stop it, including wave, wind, solar and nuclear power, as well as geoengineering, and advocates a carbon emissions tax to finance investment. As the British media points out, it’s a nice U-turn from a man whom the UN climate chief once compared to Adolf Hitler.

Bush 50 – Obama 42

Previewing Ohio
We’ll start rolling out our Ohio poll results tomorrow but there’s one finding on the poll that pretty much sums it up: by a 50-42 margin voters there say they’d rather have George W. Bush in the White House right now than Barack Obama.

Independents hold that view by a 44-37 margin and there are more Democrats who would take Bush back (11%) than there are Republicans who think Obama’s preferable (3%.)

A couple months ago I thought the Pennsylvanias and Missouris and Ohios of the world were the biggest battlegrounds for 2010 but when you see numbers like this it makes you think it’s probably actually the Californias and the Wisconsins and the Washingtons.

There’s not much doubt things are getting worse for Democrats…and they were already pretty bad. Somehow the party base needs to get reinvigorated over the next two months or there’s going to be a very, very steep price to pay.

Hurricane Able – 1950

From Wikipedia :

Hurricane Able (1950)
Category 4 hurricane (SSHS)

Duration    August 12 – August 22 (1950)
Intensity    140 mph (220 km/h) (1-min), 953 mbar (hPa)

The beginning of season was very inactive until the middle of August, when a tropical wave spawned a tropical storm east of the Lesser Antilles on August 12. Given the name “Able”, it reached hurricane status on August 13, and it gradually intensified as it tracked generally west-northwestward. By early on August 18, Able reached peak winds of 140 mph (225 km/h), and initially it posed a threat to the Bahamas and Florida.[3][6][11] Instead, the hurricane turned to the northwest, and later to the northeast, passing just offshore Cape Hatteras, North Carolina and Cape Cod. Steadily weakening and moving faster, Able struck Nova Scotia as a tropical storm and later Newfoundland as a tropical depression, before dissipating late on August 22 in the far northern Atlantic Ocean.[3][6]
Along the coast of North Carolina, the hurricane produced light winds and rough waves,[12] as well as moderate precipitation. Heavier rainfall occurred in southern New England,[13] causing flooding in portions of New York City and producing slick roads that caused nine traffic fatalities.[14] Able produced hurricane force winds in Nova Scotia,[3] and damage across Canada totaled over $1 million (CAD), between crops, communications, and fishing industries.[15] Overall, the hurricane killed 26 people in Canada.[16]

At least there is still sunlight. For a few more days.

Once the sun sets, those nice satellite photos aren’t going to be available any more. So enjoy them while you can.

A Banner Day For Climate Censorship

Censorship so far today :

My post below is gone  from Romm’s site. I wonder what he didn’t like? A clear violation of the TOU – LOL

Excellent news. Looks like my SEARCH forecast will probably win this year.

I’d appreciate comments.

WUWT – jeez didn’t like me pointing out that the Arctic has all three phases of water at the same time, because his understanding of the phase diagram tells him that it can’t happen. So I got banned permanently. How dare me have  a different opinion.

Steven, this is your last thread on WUWT. You are going out on the most embarrassing note I could imagine. I could not have conceived of a script where you could behave worse.

Will Tamino do better? I’m betting he will. The verdict is still out.

Phil.

As I am sure you are aware, Anthony shut down comments – so it would be pretty difficult for me to respond.

However, it does appear that the 1999 “global graph” probably excluded the 70% of the globe which comprises the oceans, so the basis of my article was most likely incorrect.

Updates for September 2.

Tamino fails on the first post, but posts the second.

Anthony informs that I have not been banned, rather the thread was cut off right after jeez’ last diatribe.

Hurricanes In The 1940s

During the period 1941-1950, twenty-four hurricanes made landfall in the US – including ten major hurricanes. This was the most active decade for hurricanes since at least 1850.

Check out the 1950 season above. There were six major hurricanes by September 8.

CO2 levels were 310 ppm at the time, well below Hansen’s safe level of 350 ppm.

I’m willing to bet that Romm won’t be talking about that this weekend.
