USA Today is claiming this weekend’s tornado was the longest on record at 223 miles.

The longest tornado of the 20th century occurred in 1917 – covering 293 miles of Illinois and Indiana. That was seventy miles longer than this weekend’s tornado.

At the time of 1925 tornado, it was reported  the tornado divided off several offshoots which covered 700 miles in length.

Between 1916 and 1969, the busiest day of the year for tornadoes in Illinois was December 18.

In Southern Illinois, December had the fourth highest frequency of deadly tornadoes – just behind April and May.
