Study: Sea level rise accelerating more than once thought

WASHINGTON — The world’s oceans are now rising far faster than they did in the past, a new study says.
The study found that for much of the 20th century — until about 1990 — sea level was about 30 percent less than earlier research had figured. But that’s not good news, scientists say, because about 25 years ago the seas started rising faster and the acceleration in 1990 turns out to be more dramatic than previously calculated.
The current sea level rise rate — which started in 1990 — is 2.5 times faster than it was from 1900 to 1990, according to a study published Wednesday in the journal Nature. Scientists say that faster pace of sea level rise is from melting ice sheets in Greenland and West Antarctica and shrinking glaciers, triggered by man-made global warming.
“We’re seeing a significant acceleration in the past few decades,” said study lead author Carling Hay, a geophysical researcher at Harvard University. “It’s concerning for cities along the U.S. East Coast” where water levels are rising even faster than the world average.
“It’s definitely something that can’t be ignored,” Hay said.
This is utter nonsense. Tide gauges along the East Coast (or anywhere else) don’t show an uptick 25 years ago. In fact, they show the fastest rise before 1950.

What changed is that they added satellite data to the mix in 1992, which shows big bulges in the middle of the ocean in regions where the error is almost as large as the trend. A signal/noise ratio of 0.

The new reconstruction suggests a linear trend of 1.9 ± 0.3 mm·yr?1 during the 20th century, with 1.8 ± 0.5 mm·yr?1 since 1970.

The claims of an acceleration in sea level rise are mindless nonsense. It is equivalent to switching to an uncalibrated scale, and claiming that you lost weight as soon as you switched scales.
Hmmm. Adjusting the past downwards to create an accelerated trend. I would call that fraud, there is no reason to make these adjustments, unless you are trying to fit a narrative.

Both Borenstein and Carling Hay KNOW (or certainly should know) that the East Coast is subsiding and that (on average) global sea level rises and falls – – (wait for this) – – GLOBALLY

Borenstein has made so many buffoonishly wrong statements over the past decade that one can only conclude he is a total fraud. If merely incompetent, he would have occasionally said something nearly right.
One factor contributing to subsidence along the east coast is water withdrawal from confined aquifers in the Atlantic coastal plain. The subsequent decline in head (hydraulic pressure) allows the sediments of the aquifers to gradually compress. Other factors include natural compaction of ancient delta sediments from the weight of overlying material, isostatic adjustments, and tectonic movements.
Not to mention the terra-forming on the east coast. For example the 19th-century filling project in Boston Back Bay was a bay.
The bay was tidal: the water rose and fell several feet over the course of each day, and at low tide much of the bay’s bed was exposed as a stinky marshy flat. (Think dead cows, horses and raw sewage.) In 1835 Jackson hired Asa Sheldon, a Wilmington farmer, to supervise the job of filling in the bay. Sheldon used oxen to move Pemberton Hill into the Backbay of Boston, removing 70 ft from the top of the hill.
Now there are buildings sitting on that fill. Given much of the east coast was changed in a similar manner, with the filling in of pestilence ridden stinky marshy flats, I would be very surprised if there was not subsidence over 150 years or more. The fraud was triggered by Aston’s promise and warning about nuclear energy on 12 DEC 1922 [1], unreported chaos and fear of world-wide nuclear annihilation in AUG-SEPT 1945 [1], and a sincere desire “to save the world from nuclear annihilation” with false models of energy in cores of heavy atoms and ordinary stars in 1946 [2].
They inadvertently isolated humanity from the Creator, Destroyer and Sustainer of every atom, life and world in the solar system today [3], . . .
. . . a volume of space that has expanded over the past five billion years to be greater than the combined volumes of 10,000,000,000,000,000,000 Earth’s !

Figure 3 on the 3rd page of your link http://nora.nerc.ac.uk/504181/1/1-s2.0-S0921818113002750-main.pdf says the most. That trend looks roughly linear since the Little Ice Age. There is no increased slope since 1950. Put another way, AGW has added nothing (that we can tell) to the natural trend.
Of course it is Fraud ; no one could be that Incompetent for so long !!

The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change was created in 1988 . Set up by the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and the United Nations Environment Program (UNEP).
Those that formed the UN in 1945, probably had no concept of CC Fraud ; that came later.
