Seven years ago, CU professor Mark Williams announced the demise of Colorado skiing and 10 degrees warming.

This was followed by lots of record ski seasons, and we didn’t hear much from Mark. But he is back today.

Rescuers just recovered the body of an Aspen skier who died in an avalanche yesterday. Conditions had been too dangerous to attempt the rescue, because of too much snow.

I’m flying back from Denver right now, after four days of near record snow and cold.
The ski season is already unnaturally long because of snow making technology.
It took me 26 hours to get home to Sacramento from Aspen starting Saturday evening. We ended up driving to Salt Lake City and catching a flight out the next day due to the storm.
I noticed stickers for this group on the lift towers at Aspen Highlands: http://protectourwinters.org/climate-snow. Never let reality get in the way of a feel guilty/feel good message, I guess.
Glad you made it back safely. The snow was great. Now we need the jet stream to re-visit us here in northern California.
Yea Mark, I bet you’re really worried that cutting edge predictions like that could really effect your career… while your snout’s planted firmly in the public money trough. BTW I always check with a geography(?) professor before I book skiing trips any time after 2110 AD or so… just in case the maps might be wrong. What a HACK.
If one goes off piste they better know what their doing or be with someone that does. In the real mountains, away from the groomed slopes, is where the real skiing is IMO. But you just don’t go there without being able to recognize the dangers unless you really don’t give a hoot about your life.
The best way is to be familiar with the terrain without snow cover. But one can be safe and have fun even if the real terrain underneath the snow is not familiar if you know what to look for and look out for.
Spent an awfully lot of time in mountains on skies. From the east to the Rockies in the US and from Norway to Northern Italy and all points except the Pyrenees in between. And only got caught in one minor avalanche the whole time.
Plenty of other dangers besides avalanches. On foot had an old Italian Army Alpini mountain guide lead us down a tough slope. Told us to stay in his trail and we did. Every once in a while he would reach over with his long handled ice axe and poke and a hole would open up. After a few of those times I began to pick out what he was looking for to determine where those traps were. We were walking down over large jagged rocks totally covered with snow though one wouldn’t have known it if they hadn’t been familiar with the place without snow cover. In places the snow had bridged over between two peaks on these jagged boulders to form a void. Some of those voids were 20′ deep down to the jagged rock below. A slight darkening of the snow was the only hint they were there.
“The resorts will be in fine shape for the next 25 years,” but watch out after that. I wish I could get away with forecasts like that.
Yes, I forecast that in 10,000 years nearly all of Canada and much of the northern US will be under a mile of ice again.
please do not come to Wisconsin; it is already plenty cold enough here
Apparently Homeland Security in Maryland is on the lookout for Steve, and not because he is a skeptic. He’s actually Mr Freeze! Maryland better lookout this weekend.
I have to laugh about this kind of idiocy. The weather is not controlled by humans, it has never been influenced by human activity. Seasons come and go, but some think that they can change this by insinuating that Climate Change is causing disruption to ‘Mother Nature’. ‘Mother Nature’ can easily take care of herself, she’s been around as long as the human race, even a few days longer.
So, maybe Steven is in a secret alliance with Al Gore! 🙂
