Gavin Easily Wins The Stupidest Tweet Of The Day Award

It doesn’t get much dumber than this. Temperatures in DC on June 22 and 23, 1998 were both all time records in DC at 101 and 98. Hansen and Wirth had no way of knowing that a few weeks later it would be even hotter, arranged the hearings to coincide with the record heat, and sabotaged the air conditioner in the hearing room.

But no matter how you look at, Hansen deserves credit for healing the planet with his 1988 warnings. 1988 was the last really hot summer in the US, and ended the long standing tradition of very hot US summers.

    Calling Mickey Mann,

    Calling Trenberth..

surely they can’t let that stand !!!

Soooooo, the man that can and does adjust the temperature record at will is telling us which day was hotter? His career path is very bright as long as this administration is in charge.

Next he will claim that Reagan turned off the A/C to soften his jelly beans.

  4. Folks, air conditioners never work on the hottest days of all time. They install AC’s with certain BTU for the area, and the hottest days usually are beyond the capacity of the system. It’s funny how people always think the AC “went out” when it can’t cool 101 degree air with a dew point of 74, but the next day, all of a sudden the AC miraculously fixed itself the next day when it’s 75.

TIMOTHY WIRTH: What we did is that we went in the night before and opened all the windows, I will admit, right, so that the air conditioning wasn’t working inside the room. And so when the- when the hearing occurred, there was not only bliss, which is television cameras and double figures, but it was really hot.

It was not A BTU issue. I have had A/C my entire adult life, and it has never. failed me, even in 115 heat. Same goes for every shopping mall, hospital, office building and airport I have ever known.

Mine failed me a couple of years ago. Capacitor for the motor on the outside unit gave up the ghost. Of course when they go is when they’re under a heavy load. I fixed it myself. The motor on it now is heavier duty. In fact I had to reinforce the top cover where it attaches to be sure it’s heavier weight doesn’t tear the sheet metal where the bolts pass through. Modern Water softners, Water heaters, and HVAC units, Garbage disposals, and things like that are some of the few electronic/mechanical things remaining that a back yard mechanic can still do some serious work on without a whole lot of specialized equipment and knowledge.

I should have stated more clearly that I was referring to Morgan’s claim that an A/C unit can take the day off on a hot day, and then return for work a day later when it is cooler. I had to replace my A/C unit five years ago when a lightning strike caused a surge that took out the compressor. A/C units go bad like any other appliance, and maybe Morgan is referring to a unit on it’s way out…

“…the AC “went out” when it can’t cool 101 degree air with a dew point of 74, but the next day, all of a sudden the AC miraculously fixed itself the next day when it’s 75.”

          Who needs A/C at 75 anyway? 😆

I knew what you meant Gator and sorry I left the impression I didn’t. I have just been thinking about how the number of things we use in our every day life that a regular guy can work on and fix keep getting fewer. And A/C happens to be one of those things that at least a guy with basic mechanical and electrical knowledge can fix as long as he doesn’t have to get into the digital controls.

        • gator69 says:

On that note, I could have simply replaced the compressor, but because units keep getting more efficient and parts are so expensive it made more sense to just replace the whole unit. Same goes with cars these days, I used to replace motors instead of VIN numbers.

      • If they install AC units with a capacity which is higher than the hottest day, then yeah, but that costs a lot more money to install.

    • Gail Combs says:

GEE, Morgan we had a window A/C unit in our house in Taxachusetts. One year we hit highs near 100 °F for several days and the A/C unit did fine. At work it was so hot the motherboard of my computer melted because the Chem Eng insisted on using it during the heat of the day. At was also hot enough that the road tar soften and my horses hoofs left foot prints or took chunks out of the road.

Unfortunately at this point you can not trust the weather ‘history’ For instance Washington DC, sitting on the Atlantic coast shows 102 °F as the high in July of 1988 when Hansen gave his testimony yet inland Raleigh-Durham Airport, NC, 233 miles south only shows a high of 97 °F for the same month… RIIiiight.

      Raleigh NC … Elevation:…348 feet
      Plant Hardiness Zone = 7b
Washington, District of Columbia, USA … Elevation: 313 ft.
      Plant Hardiness Zone = 7a

“each zone is divided into “a” and “b,” with “a” having, on average, five degrees colder winters than “b.””

The really do want to mess with our heads. All the 100+ °F I sweltered through will building fences and barns has now been downgraded to the ~95 °F range.

  5. Latimer Alder says:

Gav is a scream, ain’t he? Here he is at his inane best running away from a slightly bemused Roy Spencer. Priceless.

PS Does ‘wanker’ mean in US English what it does in UK? Hope so
