Great Lakes Ice Above Last Year’s Record Coverage

The Great Lakes obliterated all records for springtime ice last year, and this year is poised to blow away last year’s records. All of the lakes have more ice than they did on this day last year.

I am sure IPCC will declare it warmest winter ever.

    • Hugh says:

Define cold. It appears to be raining water in Helsinki right now, and that has been going on for weeks and weeks now. Not much remains of snow left. And we’re here at 60°N 25°E, pretty north, that is. As north as southmost Greenland and only slightly souther than Anchorage.

The temps are typically somewhere around -5°C, ranging from roughly +10°C to -30°C. So this is not an impossible heat wave, but rather a prolonged mild and wet season. The sea between Fennoscandia and Baltic countries is largely open.

      • Gail Combs says:

What happens is the jet stream goes from zonal to meandering. When it meanders like it has for the last few years you get very cold areas and warm areas.

It also means warm moist air is sucked north where it meets the very cold Arctic air and it them dumps a lot of snow. For example Buffalo NY (42.9° N) got seven feet of snow from one storm. Greek islands in the Mediterranean were buried under 6½ ft (2 m) of snow. In China there was waist-deep snow It was the most severe snowstorm in years. Japan has had storm after storm including heavy snow fall in semi-tropical areas. Algeria and Libya had a decent amount of snow as did Saudi Arabia, Iran and Israel.

What people forget is it is not cold that marks an Ice Age but snow that does not melt, and you only get snow if there is moisture in the air. That is why the Laurentide Ice Sheet follows the pattern of cold and snow we are seeing in the USA today. That is why Siberia and Alaska was not under an ice sheet.

        • Cromag says:

Buffalo NY got its snow from lake effect. Not warm moist air traveling north. The warm moist air which would come from the south didn’t happen, as in Tenn, we felt no flow of warm, moist air traveling north. And you did not mention the The Maunder Minimum which due to minimum sunspot activity made the little ice age back in the 1600’s. Reading your post seems to suggest global warming is the snow culprit.

In 60 years all the temperature data of year 2015 will be adjusted down by 5 degrees and ice coverage will be trippled to show freezing people sorrounded by snow 6month a year at the grear lakes that it became warmer and that man made global warming and co2 ended the ice age in 2040.

That brings back memories of a comment by RACookPE1978 (December 31, 2013 at 7:21 am )

….For the past two years, Antarctic sea ice has been consistently two std deviations ABOVE normal levels for sea ice, AND that sea ice extends around the continent to latitude 60 south at maximum extents in September. Arctic sea ice (through this year) been right at 1.5 to 2 std deviations low from normal.

BUT! The Antarctic sea ice extents maximum is just under 20 Mkm^2, but the entire Arctic ocean is only 14 Mkm^2: There is much more Antarctic sea ice than Arctic. At minimum extents, the difference is more impressive: Antarctic continental ice (14 Mkm^2) is as large as the entire Arctic itself, but that rock-based icecap is in turn surrounded by 3.5 Mkm^2 of permanent ice shelves, and then by the ever changing Antarctic sea ice. So even at today’s minimum Antarctic sea ice extents 2-3 Mkm^2 (and increasing!) the total southern ice is 14 + 3.5 + 2.5 = 20 Mkm^2. At maximum southern extents, those become 14.0 + 3.5 + 19.5 = 35 Mkm^2 is frozen. 2-1/2 times the maximum of what sea water is available up north….

How much larger can Antarctic sea ice get? There is no limit. At today’s rate of Antarctic sea ice increase, Cape Horn itself could be closed to ship traffic due to sea ice within 8-10 years for months at a time every September and October. It probably won’t happen, but the trend is there: we have been seeing just under 1.0 Mkm^2 more sea ice each year for several years now.

To the specific point of open Arctic waters being a heat loss area from the earth. Notice that we are assuming far-north openings here, not a theoretical physics textbook ice mass of theoretical albedo….

The more the Arctic sea ice melts from today’s minimum extents in August and September, the more the planet loses heat energy to space and cools down ever more. Your CAGW’s religiously amplified but majestically feared “arctic amplification” due to sea ice meltdown is totally, completely backwards.

<b.But it is worse than you think!

At today’s levels of BOTH minimum AND maximum extent in the Antarctic seas, today’s (and last year’s!) record breaking sea ice extents DO reflect much more solar energy than the exposed waters! At the edge of the Antarctic sea ice at 60 – 70 south latitude, ALL YEAR, every day, the record-breaking Antarctic sea ice extents IS reflecting MORE solar energy and IS cooling the planet down even more.

And thus we slide quickly into the next major ice age.

Now we can also throw in the albedo from an increase in snow coverage in the Northern Hemisphere.

  6. Mohatdebos says:

Calling Jeff Masters. What happened to the Lake Superior warm spot that proved the global warming hypothesis was correct.

  7. Nobama says:

As long as there is a patch of bare ground somewhere, the CAGW cult will declare that to be the “hot” spot. Yesterday I was in Tahoe, and it was beautiful and largely snow free. The weather report indicated snow today, but that has moved to later in the week now. So, you see, wherever ManBearPig has floated to in the heavens, THAT is the spot of warming.

  8. Latitude says:

Even though the east coast had record low temps..
…the west coast record highs were so much higher

The US will still show warming…

    (or something like that)……………………….

  9. Dave Lowry says:

There have been some other harsh winters in the USA (and not only there) in the past 100 years. For example, some of them have been caused by the two World Wars. I’ve read an interesting post about that, I recommend it to you: http://www.2030climate.com/a2005/02_32-Dateien/02_32.html.

  10. Andy DC says:

Every idiot knows that global warming can make winters milder and shorter, also colder and longer. It is settled science! Only a gun toting, heteronormative, evil, angry Republican white male, who denies 97% of science experts, would think otherwise!

    • Hugh says:

That’s why it’s called climate change. Because we don’t know it global warming is gonna warm us or not.

    • Hugh K says:

Cause and effect? – (the totally fabricated) 97% of science ‘experts’ funded by 97% of the 1 percenters to produce a 97% profit.
Can’t wait for the Republicans to start hearings on NASA/NOAA temp ‘adjustments’. The science is BS so follow the money….

  11. Jason Calley says:

As Tony has demonstrated, the most certain effect of increasing CO2 is the direct linear relationship of CO2 to official changes in the data. Every year that CO2 goes up is adjusted to be “the hottest year evah!”
