40 Years Since Climatologists Blamed California Drought On Global Cooling

In 1976, climatologists said that that global cooling caused drought and fires in California, and produced catastrophic erratic weather globally.

  1. emsnews says:

So true. It is no coincidence that the drought in California coincides with severe cooling of most of North American continent landmasses to the East.

    • This is one of my all time favorites… stunning reversal… total hypocrisy…

They think nobody will remember… and Nobody, certainly NOBODY will ask Jerry Brown to comment on his reversal…

      • Robert says:

I remember in the 70’s how the scare was “slipping toward another Ice Age.” Global warming is nothing but a Ponzi Scheme to rid people and companies and countries of their money. Direct climate change is based on solar output. If the weather changes, look to the sun. or we can all quit eating foods that cause flatulence. It will decrees the methane emissions. I am all for a clean earth, and we should all do our part for clean air and water good quality non-GMO foods.

      • cascadian12 says:

No, hypocrisy is the GOP’s middle name. Jerry Brown, like many other people, translated then-current scientific information into a policy recommendation. So what? He’s not wrong about the drought. California has always been desert. It wouldn’t be “blooming” if not for the diversion of water from rivers and the mining of groundwater. It doesn’t take much in the way of weather anomalies – whether cold or hot – to affect California’s precipitation and snowpack; something you would know if you were half as smart as you think you are.

        • Marc Jeric says:

There is in the West a weather cycle for the past 60 million years that goes like this:
          1) 3-4 years of normal rainfall;
          2) 3-4 years of floods;
          3) 3-4 years of drought.
You would hope that people and politicians would learn this fact!
Back during his first governorship Moonbeam Brown organized a new bureaucracy called “Drought Control Administration” with 1,500 new bureaucrats. They occupied 3 floors in the skyscraper in downtown Los Angeles. Overnight the bureaucrats proclaimed new rules – no daytime sprinklers; no weekend car washing; new low-flow flushes in shit-houses; cruising inspectors imposing fines of daytime sprinklers; etc., etc.
However the year after came the floods – what to do comrade Brown? Well – change the name of that new bureaucracy! To what? “Flood Control Administration” – of course!

        • Dale left coast says:

Hows that Delta Smelt doing these days ?

The insane left are makin hay with the weather these days . . . was there a time when the Climate did not change? When was that?

        • Marc Jeric says:

“We must invest in green renewable energies!” – declared Mullah B. Hussein Obama, our Marxist Muslim President from Kenya. These do not exist: they are unreliable, many times more expensive, and environmentally destructive – briefly they do not exist. In the meantime Obama is obstructing any domestic energy developments.
After the failure of the New Ice Age panic designed to produce our unilateral disarmament in the 1970’s; after the failure of the Global Warming hoax in the 1990’s to result in a UN-sponsored world socialist government; after the failure of the Climate Change flim-flam in the 2000’s following 18 years of cooling; now we must legislate, by fiat and executive orders – if necessary – the new Cap & Trade regime designed to nationalize all our energy companies – oil & gas, coal mines, electric utilities, transportation companies – in order to save the planet, whether it is heating up, cooling off, or just stays the same. Obama’s man in charge of that campaign is that low-IQ bloviating gasbag John Kerry now relying on Obama’s executive orders (known in the defunct USSR as “ukasi or diktats”). Coming on the heels of our health care nationalization, the government will be in direct charge of about 50% of our economy. To handle all that new work, the government will need about 4 million new employees – all unionized, of course.
That is the point in my reflections when I remembered Churchill’s prophetic definition: “Socialism is the philosophy of failure, the creed of ignorance, and the gospel of envy.”

Left wing liberal Democrats make it up as they go along. Does anybody not know this?

    • Buffy Flunnies says:

Yeah, left wing liberal Democrat voters.

    • cascadian12 says:

Another brilliant Bagger observation. Go back to sleep, Gramps.

      • theDoug says:

Name calling. That’s all you’ve got? Now I am completely swayed to your way of thinking.

      • Marc Jeric says:

In the news on this Friday, September 13, 2013: already this year, 35,440 reported fires have burned a total of 3.9 million acres, with a quarter-million acres scorching the iconic Yosemite National Park. Large blazes continue to burn in several states, with six alive in Idaho, five each in California and Montana, and one each in Alaska, Louisiana, Oregon, Texas and Washington. The National Interagency Fire Center in Boise, Idaho, says at this time last year, 45,278 fires had burned 7.9 million acres, and in 2011, there were 55,619 fires devastating 7.2 million acres.
These disasters are not the work of any jihadists but of our own Eco-Nazis who have forbidden any measures of forest management – you know, in order to “preserve the nature”. No forest management actions are allowed – such as removal of dead and infected trees and of dried-up bushes and leaves, or culling of too dense growths. But then it all becomes understandable when one knows that the environmentalism is a true cult of death.
Now in 2015 the same fires, the same Eco-Nazi explanations,…

They were probably right about the cooling period causing regional drought. Like said above, the weather pattern that brings extreme cold to the northeast US is associated with western drought.

  5. Hifast says:

There’s a direct correlation in my lifetime to California droughts and Edmund G. Brown Jr.’s terms as CA Governor.

  6. Lance says:

Some are saying the next 30 + yrs will see Cooling on the order of that experienced during the Dalton Minimum. See: http://www.spaceandscience.net/sitebuildercontent/sitebuilderfiles/ssrcpressrelease22015rationale.pdf

Something to watch. At least to see if these guys are on target or not.

    • sfx2020 says:

The 30 year trend for half of the US is cooling already. Mostly from the recent extreme cooling.

      • Lance says:

Yes. Agreed. My concern is that if the SSRC view is valid, then significant geopolitical fallout would be probable. Warming isn’t/hasn’t happened. With sunspots at the Dalton Minimum, cooling is more likely. A cooling trend through 2050 or so would likely provide a 20% or greater reduction in food crops. Life could get ugly. Preparation for such an event might be relevant if the curve continues along the projected path for another few years. Just saying: “Keep an eye on cooling”.

    • ChrisGC says:

My hope is to live just long enough to see all the warming alarmists freeze their collective butts off!

  8. Truthseeker says:

This is from a comment by Peter Miller on Jo Nova’s latest thread about the latest University promoted dogma …

One of the things I love about ‘climate science’ is that must be the only field of study where:
Only the future is certain, the past is always changing.

Getting to the nub of the matter, so to speak.

    • Lance says:

@Truthseeker, That is too funny. 🙂 If the future is so very certain, perhaps the cognoscenti will guarantee in writing their personal fortunes to defray the costs of their being wrong. Not holding my breath. But surely, if “they truly believe” their own BS, it ought not be out of the question as they want everyone else to finance it.

  9. sfx2020 says:

“One of the things I love about ‘climate science’ is that must be the only field of study where:

  10. Where I live was a km deep in ice just a few thousand years ago, Vancouver BC. Does he think Yosemite was contoured by wind?
The problem is these modlers have no frame of reference. There is no accurate record of sea or atmosphere temps, or CO2 for that matter that extend back in time. Proxies are only proxies. He, Schmidt, Jones, Mann or other alarmists have no real paleo data, only weak proxies.
One proxie that got me interested in the solar affect on climate was made a long time ago. Sunspot vs wheat price.
Care to estimate global temp with that mr Mann? Or even compare it to your tree ring data?

    • ChrisGC says:

The funny thing is the Mann’s debunked “hockey stick” graph was discredited by a more complete data set from the same areas he cherry picked data from to form the graph in the first place!

  12. Steve, you missed highlighting the BEST line of the July 12, 1976 NYT article:

“It’s interesting.” said one skeptical scientist. “But some of their stuff is right out of fantasy land.”

  13. Allencic says:

Clearly the only possible cause of California droughts is having a governor named Brown.

  14. binthere222 says:

So what was happening 40 years ago to cause predictions of global cooling? It fit the all out left wing socialist propaganda blitz to stop US military and nuclear modernization and the stationing of Medium range missiles in Europe which eventually led to the end of the iron curtain. They called it “nuclear winter” and all of the NYC media and SJWs tooled up to tout the party line from moscow/beijing.

Global warming, now called “the north polar gyre” (because it is cold) has one thing in common with “Nuclear Winter”, They are both propaganda efforts coming from moscow/beijing dedicated to shutting down military and industrial activity in free nations, while the communist world steams full speed ahead.

Jerry Brown, shut down chinese CO2 and pollution first which is now shrouding California, before setting us back to the stone age.

Stalin said, propaganda is the most important tool of war, AND IT IS TRUE.

    • Scott says:

Has nothing to do with co2 pollution..etc. Ice age comes around every 309 years..coming right on schedule..nothing we can do about it except build a fire?

  15. thehort says:

I bet the 4 scientists that made those predictions in the 70’s are the same 4 that don’t believe in climate change today. LOL

  16. TimM says:

Scientists have now beccome just another of the corrrupt professions, raising used car salesmen to that status of honorable jobs

  17. Sometimes when I post stuff like this to my FB people attack me saying “what about when there is no food to eat?” I agree, but it won’t be because the climate warmed, that usually results in proliferation of flora. Nope, it will be from cooling, where the history of our planet shows that leads to extinctions.

I call the Warmists this: Hysterions. They are hysterical and they are morons who wouldn’t know good science if it bit them on their global butts.

  18. rightofright says:

How many times has the mighty Boa brought this up? AH HAHAHA!

And look it up. There was at least ONE TIME, could have been a couple, that Popular Science had right on the cover. …”The Coming Ice Age”……..probably sometime in the late 70s……..

  19. Greg Turner says:

So you have one article claiming global cooling is the cause California’s drought in 1976. Then Jerry Brown has a drought conference in 1977 where global cooling isn’t listed in the article. Sorry i fail to see how the two are remotely related. Now show me a quote from Jerry blaming the drought on global cooling then you have something.

  20. 100% of all things that the left says, claims, or believes, is all fairy tale fantasy BS. Liberals get their “facts” by one of them making up a lie and then spreading that lie around to other liberals.

  24. Mike says:

    Why is California Brown?

  25. Rhee says:

Slightly off topic, but related to predictions: Dr. Iben Browning famously predicted a catastrophic earthquake would occur along the New Madrid Fault in southern Missouri sometime in December 1990. I was living nearby at the time and remember the hordes of news trucks that descended on the region waiting to videotape a massive earthquake. It appeared really stupid to me that so many “journalists” would want to sit in the midst of a fault zone which had recorded one of the strongest quakes in US history. Needless to say, the earthquake hasn’t yet appeared in Missouri, but it’s only been 25 years, so any day now.

Time to tell those stupid scientists that believe in climate change that they are all wrong.

  28. James Pope says:

    Dear all,

It seems Steven Goddard has fallen into a common trap when making comments about scientific findings. Rather than trying to find out what scientists are or were actually saying, he has quoted news reports and politicians, both of whom use spin to meet their agenda.

Had Steven done any research into 1970s global cooling, he would have found that there was no scientific consensus on global cooling whatsoever during that period. In fact, a peer-reviewed survey of scientific papers about global temperature published between 1965 and 1979 found 7 papers concluding cooling, 20 neutral papers, and 44 papers concluding warming:

    http://journals.ametsoc.org/doi/pdf/10.1175/2008BAMS2370.1

The Newsweek article that kicked off the whole 1970s global cooling fandango was written by Peter Gwynne. Peter has since gone on record saying he and the climate change scientists he quoted were wrong:

    http://www.slate.com/articles/technology/future_tense/2014/12/_1975_newsweek_article_on_global_cooling_how_climate_change_deniers_use.html

Today there is a consensus that the earth is warming due to our greenhouse gas emissions:

    http://www.ipcc.ch/

and a growing consensus that this will make our weather more extreme:

    http://www.nature.com/nclimate/journal/vaop/ncurrent/full/nclimate2617.html

Please read these websites and articles. If you read them, understand them and still disagree, I would be interested to hear from you. If you don’t understand them, then may I suggest you leave climate science to the climate scientists – 97% of whom understand that global warming is happening, is happening because of us, and is likely to have disastrous consequences.

    Kind regards,

    James

      • James Pope says:

        Dear Steven,

All you have done is find a number of newspaper articles that quote a minority of scientists who got something wrong 40 years ago. Of course newspapers are going to publish articles that suggest the end of the world is nigh. They love that stuff, because they know we love that stuf.

You are simply confusing unbalanced press coverage with actual scientific results, in the same way many climate deniers do today.

The basic fact is that, having looked at data collected over many years by many different people using many different methods, almost all climate scientists draw the same conclusion: that the world is warming, it is warming because of our emissions, and it is going to cause us problems if we don’t do something about it.

In the 1960s and 70s fewer than 10% of papers published about climate changes concluded that cooling was happening, and those scientists’ conclusions turned out to be wrong.

I am not saying that the world is definitely warming, or that it is definitely our fault. I am just saying that, today, unlike your example of global cooling, almost all the people most qualified to collect and analyse climate data say that it is, and almost everyone believes them.

Rockefeller heirs divesting from fossil fuels on grounds of climate change should be all deniers need to know about which way the world is going.

My advice to conservatives would be stop whinging about a conspiracy and do what you do best – use the new business opportunities that creating a low emission future brings, and go make a stack of cash…

        …before you get left behind.

        • darwin says:

Nothing the well funded government “climatologists” predicted in the last 40 years has come true.

Exactly who is the denier here?

        • Dale left coast says:

Jimmie . . . why don’t you just produce the “Science” that proves AGW?
What you can’t . . . Anthropogenic Gorebull Warming is an unproven Hypothesis . . . there is NO science. It is all about “scientists believe” . . .
The basis of the IPCC scare is 117 computer models . . . all wrong for decades now.
Phil Jones at the CRU East Anglia “Hid the Decline” and fudged the data, controlled peer review process. While NOA adjusted the data . . . and imagined temperatures for 60% of the land mass.

Reality is NASA Satellite data shows NO Warming now since 1998 . . . as the CO2 increases slightly. CO2 is Plant Food . . . period !

        • James Pope says:

Dale. I think all I need to say about your comment is that you called me Jimmie, when, in fact, my name is James.

Further evidence that you see plainly written evidence, and twist it to meet your agenda.

        • AndyG55 says:

The only thing a “low CO2 emissions” future will bring is the eventual demise of all life on Earth due to plants dying of CO2 deprivation.

The world is still very much at the low end of atmospheric CO2 requirements, as proven by the rapid response to raise CO2 by all plant life.

Did you know that trees exposed by receding glaciers were found to have dies from lack of CO2.

That is the really scary thing about the idiocy of the anti-CO2 agenda.

        • AndyG55 says:

Jimmie-boi.. the only people with an agenda are the anti-CO2/progress bletheren..

Of which you appear to be one.

You have ZERO science to back up the CO2 warming hypothesis, just crappy anti-validated models.

        • AndyG55 says:

“You are simply confusing unbalanced press coverage with actual scientific results…”

roflmao !!!! you are seriously funny, a child’s clown to be sure. !!

WTF do you think the whole MSM is about.

          Wake TF up , jimmie-boi2. !

        • James Pope says:

Dear Andy, you are a dinosaur. Businesses and governments across the world accepts climate change is happening. Major players are divesting from fossil fuels because they know it will be worthless in a few years. I am not here to challenge you on the science. I know you will never be persuaded, no matter how many qualified people tell you what’s going on. It’s like trying to argue with a Christian that Jesus wasn’t the son of God. I would just like to let you know that, whatever your beliefs, if you don’t move with the times and adapt to the changing social and business perception of energy provision and climate change, you’ll be about as redundant as a horse-pulled carriage maker. This is my last post on here. I have better things to do with my life than argue with a rabble of outmoded thinkers.
          James

        • gator69 says:

Gee, another alarmist who refuses to debate skeptics on the science. Keep the faith Jimmy!

“All churches, mosques, temples and synagogues agree…” 😆

    • AndyG55 says:

Consensus and science are NOT compatible.

But you go ahead and think they are.

      Its all you have. !

      Your ignorance is thus demonstrated.

And really, to still pull that 97% garbage.. you HAVE to be joking !!!
