Yes the peanut farmer was a piece of work. I well remember the gas lines when Jimmy boy thought the government could control the price of oil. And being told to turn down the thermostat and wear a sweater inside during the winter.

Thankfully I never had a problem finding high octane for my Chevy Nova with a 396, Hurst 4 on the floor, positract rear end, Cragar wheels with 70 series tires on the back.

    • Johnson says:

It was actually the Republicans who capped the price of gasoline. If the price were not capped, there would have been no lines.

What is amazing about Carter’s statement, at the time, is that he would surely have known all about the massive oil reserves in Alaska and, in particular, the massive oil find at Gull Island off Prudhoe Bay, which was classified immediately after the results of the first burn came in.

The seismographic work and the drillings undertaken in the early 1970s had shown there was as much oil under the North Slope of Alaska as in all of Saudi Arabia.

Carter would have known at the time that the Prudhoe Bay oil field was one of the largest oil fields on the face of the earth. Not only that, Carter would have also known that there was enough gas reserves to supply the US for 200 to 300 years.

The real problem, at the time, was Washington wanted an energy crisis. That, in itself, is another astounding story. The truth is the US government has never hesitated to lie to the American people over US energy policy.

    • rah says:

It was about expanding Federal Power. It gave them an excuse to create the Department of Energy. A Department that has failed in almost every goal set out in it’s charter but which is a very effective tool for controlling the masses and implementing the social changes the government desires. Imagine what would happen if some guy in a garage invented a device that could economically, cleanly, and safely provide all the energy a household of any size needs?

      • Ernest Bush says:

The DOE is more about control than you even know. It has had its own special pseudo-military teams operating from at least the 90’s. At the time I saw them practicing they really were wearing black special ops type gear and doing military-style ops simulations.

      • omanuel says:

As I recall, the name of the federal agency was changed from the AEC (Atomic Energy Commission) to ERDA (Energy Research & Development Agency) to DOE (Department of Energy). There may have been intermediate names, but the purpose has always been to hide the powerful source of energy in cores of:

        1. Atoms heavier than 150 amu
        2. Some planets like Jupiter
        3. Ordinary stars like the Sun
        4. Galaxies like the Milky Way

  3. Ernest Bush says:

None of these progressivist are putting out educated guesses ever. Scare mongering through propaganda is all this was and nothing has changed in that regard through today. Most progressive politicians have been briefed on the facts and just ignore them when they are not a useful tool for achieving their end game. Progressivism is all about lies, distortions, and failed social experiments.

Six weeks into his Presidency, Jimmy Carter’s Administration predicted the world’s oil would disappear in the first decade of the 21st Century. FAIL.

I remember this from when I was a kid. It caused me quite a bit of anxiety then.

    • Gail Combs says:

Since I had just started working I found it a royal pain in the rump. I HATE standing in line. Especially when waiting in a car in 100F heat in South Carolina.

  6. Moors710 says:

Living with the Bakken field here in North Dakota has opened the possibilities. The Shale plays around the world have 300 to 400 years supplies without significant technological or price changes ( doubling of price with fixed current tech in 400 years). The oil crisis is not going to come for a few hundred years, so I am not very excited.

  7. Brian H says:

And what if oil is abiotic? Like on Titan? And all the old oil wells continue to refill from below?

  8. alakhtal says:

Thanks God that Jimmy Carter was one term Potus. Otherwise America still pulling down the iron curtain.
