  1. Andy DC says:

If we had honest weather records, no on would think there was anything the least bit wrong with the climate. That actually we are living thru a period of unusually benign weather.

    • Rico L says:

If we didn’t have thermometers (or temp measuring systems), we wouldn’t have anything to discuss, just 4 seasons a year…. The changes that are being predicted as causing the end of civilization, aren’t even noticeable. I doubt a 2 to 4 DegC temp increase would even result in a change of wardrobe.

  2. cfgj says:

Your postings this summer will make an entertaining list if the “recovery” in arctic sea ice will be deleted this melting season.

    • Jason Calley says:

As will yours, cfgj, if it is not.

Suppose, hypothetically, that the ice dropped all the way down to 2 million km^2, a new record. Still pretty good for an ice cap that was predicted to already be melted. And then there is the Antarctic sea ice which just keeps getting bigger in contradiction to the predictions about it, as well.

      • South of the equator, ice is caused by warming.

      • AndyG55 says:

Gees, even if there is a total Arctic melt, the yearly ice levels are still WELL ABOVE the levels of most of the last 10,000. The first 6000-7000 year were marked by only having sea ice during a few months in winter, if that. Biological markers show that ice free summers were the norm.

Only a total idiot would base their PANIC about Arctic sea ice levels on a short period of warming out of the coldest period in the whole of the current Holocene Interglacial.

        • Yes, but as we can see by our friend cfgj, they don’t panic about ice melt, they gloat.

Then they cheer. Then they collect their money.

        • AndyG55 says:

“they don’t panic about ice melt, they gloat.”

That’s what makes their moronic ignorance all the more deplorable. (cfnt and Jimbo the clown)

The alarmista have nothing to gloat about even if Arctic ice does drop to new “record™” levels this year or any other year.

Arctic sea ice is currently anomalously HIGH compared to all but the last several hundred years of the Holocene.

An open, navigable Arctic would be a blessing for anyone in the region.

Like when they say atmospheric CO2 is rising, I say .. GOOD, more please.

Arctic sea ice and Greenland ice melts.. Bring it on 🙂 !!

        • Exactly. Think how easy it will be to plant a nice garden if the CO2 level is 500 or 600 ppm. Think how sweet the fruit would taste and how FAST it will grow. Bring it on!!

    • Beale says:

If …, if …, if …, Any number of things might happen, good or bad, but if the doomsayers get lucky, that won’t convert their lies into truth.

    • rah says:

So your booked on one of those cruises that will try and make it through the NW passage? Of course not! Because you know that Tony is right. The AMO has shifted cold and September will come and go and there will still be no path through.

All that despite the NISDC and NASA both declaring that the Arctic Ice melt season started earlier this year and has been lengthening.
      https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7IQBn-Sg-gc

It’s a pack of lies aimed at the gullible, and those that want to believe we’re heading for man caused climate catastrophe. People like you!

Unfortunately your posts won’t “make an entertaining list” but instead be a pathetic one. Made more so because you will certainly ignore it the day when what you claim will happen has not and will not. Once again is looking to be another tough winter for we in the midwest and those in the NE, but I have not doubt you will be harping the same old BS about the Arctic melting away next summer or realizing that your current screen name is discredited you will come back under another. All this despite the fact the worlds poles combined have as much ice now as it did 30 years ago.

Perhaps you would have done better predicting the demise of the filthy ice cap in Boston? They just announced today, July 14th, that it has “officially” melted finally.

    • gator69 says:

Why is it mindless doomers hope for an ice free Arctic? I have yet to see one of these dunces cheer any ice gains we see. They truly are sick.

If I was told I had terminal cancer, and that I should have died years ago, I wouldn’t be acting like an ass and insulting those who say I might live a full life.

Sad little dunce will never be happy. He would be elated if CAGW were real (and he truly hopes that it is), and will be crushed when he finds out that it isn’t.

      Sad clown.

      • Doug says:

So true. Must be a sad existence to hope and dream for catastrophe.

        • Jason Calley says:

Hey Doug! I think you are right… Consider the following. I have noticed that more than a few (though not all!) of the CAGW enthusiasts I have met are also faced with other serious issues. Maybe they are in a loveless marriage. Maybe they are experiencing a prolonged unemployment. Maybe they are stuck living at home with two aging and partly disabled parents. It is painful and difficult to face the real world causes of unhappiness. How much more pleasant to embrace CAGW! Now you can ignore the real reasons for your unhappiness in life. Just tell yourself, “Look! The world is going down the toilet! We face mass extinction! The oceans are turning to acid! No wonder I am unhappy. Any rational person would be unhappy. Besides, I am a GOOD person! I am trying to save the world!”

Of course, human beliefs are complex. I do not pretend that all CAGWers believe in disaster because it is emotionally convenient. I do think that it is a factor for many, however.

        • gator69 says:

They tend to be self loating, hence hating their own species. I heard a doomer the other day say that humans were the worst thing to happen to the planet, and he also confided his parents had refused him at an early age and that he was raised in foster care.

Humans are the single most miraculous thing to happen in the universe! It truly takes a sicko to say that we are not. Imagine the lengths we would go to in order to save a primitive race on anther planet that exhibited the capacity for art and invention that our ancestors did 30,000 years ago. Would we wipe them out because they fight and kill? Are we wiping out sharks who display virtually no intelligence?

Self loathing sickos are what make up the vast majority of “greens”.

          Speaking of sad existence…

What it’s like when your job is to predict the end of humanity

As recently as 2009, Camille Parmesan had a career that most scientists can only dream of.

That year, the University of Texas professor was named one of Atlantic Monthly’s 27 “Brave Thinkers” for her efforts to save species whose habitats are threatened by climate change.

The distinction — which placed Parmesan on a list alongside Steve Jobs, Mark Zuckerberg and Barack Obama — arrived two years after she shared a Nobel Peace Prize with Al Gore for serving as a lead author of the Third Assessment Report of the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC).

Camille Parmesan. (Plymouth University) Camille Parmesan. (Plymouth University)
But beneath the acclaim, Parmesan recalls, her work left her “professionally depressed” and panicked — so much so that she eventually abandoned her life in the United States for a new one on the other side of the Atlantic, according to the environmental news website Grist.

“To be honest, I panicked 15 years ago — that was when the first studies came out showing that Arctic tundras were shifting from being a net sink to being a net source of CO2,” she told Esquire’s John H. Richardson for a recent piece about the emotional toll of climate science. “That along with the fact this butterfly I was studying shifted its entire range across half a continent — I said this is big, this is big. Everything since then has just confirmed it.”

          http://www.washingtonpost.com/news/energy-environment/wp/2015/07/14/what-its-like-when-your-job-is-to-predict-the-end-of-humanity/

          Eric Worrall opines…

If you make it past Parmesan’s sharing of her angst, without losing your lunch, and through the middle of the article, the final obstacle to your digestive equilibrium is an appearance by Michael Mann, who provides readers with a detailed description of his personal multiple climate nightmares and depressive breakdowns.

Mann and Parmesan probably hope that baring their souls to the world will stir feelings of empathy, amongst people who haven’t warmed to their science. However I suspect that repeatedly revealing in depth, just how alien and strange the leaders of the climate alarmist movement are, will have the opposite effect to what they intend. People who can’t enjoy a pleasant sunny day, without experiencing intense depression, are in a mental state pretty far removed from what I think most people would consider “normal”.

          http://wattsupwiththat.com/2015/07/14/more-depressed-scientists/

So yes, they are mentally ill.

    • Caleb says:

It would be good for mankind if the ice melted to the levels of the Medieval Warm Period, and that would deserve the word “recovery.” I see no “recovery” for mankind if a Little Ice Age returns.

Usually the melt of the ice is from the bottom up. The 24-hour-a-day sunshine may melt as much as a foot from the top, but most of the melt of ice six feet thick is due to warmer waters moving under the ice.

For some odd reason the Ice which the North Pole Camera sits upon isn’t melting from beneath, so far this summer. The Mass Balance Buoy may sit in a pool of water (that man-made objects cause on sea ice), and that may show up as an erosion of ice from the top down, but the ice at the bottom hasn’t even really started to shrink.
      http://imb.erdc.dren.mil/irid_data/2015D_thick.png

I’m not sure how “entertaining” this data is, but it does seem to suggest the ice is failing to be “deleted” in the usual manner, so far. Sea-ice may not grow in the summer, or “recover”, but it can melt less than usual, and we are seeing signs of that.

New paper finds increased CO2 or methane will have ‘essentially no effect’ upon global temperature or climate http://hockeyschtick.blogspot.ca/2015/07/new-paper-finds-increased-co2-or.html

      interesting hypothesis.

  3. And the polar bear guys are awfully quiet – no crowing this year about the locations of their collared Hudson Bay bears:

    http://polarbearscience.com/2015/07/14/its-the-middle-of-july-do-researchers-know-where-their-hudson-bay-polar-bears-are/

    • Caleb says:

Can you ask them politely for their data? I especially like the data that shows the bears hunting seals where the maps show no ice exists. (I wonder if they got in some sort of trouble for that.)

  4. shazaam says:

I’d suggest they shift their temperature scale some more.

Red starts at 20 °C aka 68 °F !!!! When I was a kid (and cmputer bits were black and white stones) red started at 32 °C aka 90 °F……

Scoot that color scale down a bit more and scare the ice into melting!!! Let’s see the red start at 10 °C aka 54 °F !!!!!!!

I mean, that would be the actions of a real, government funded climate “scientist” / clown, wouldn’t it?

    • darrylb says:

shazaam, from an old science teacher that likes things as simple as possible.
      Because
      1) the F and C scales have the same temp value at minus 40 deg and
      2) a Celsius degree change is 1.8 times larger than a Fahrenheit degree change,
I had students use the following simple three step method of which the first ant third steps were the same whether converting from C to F or F to C

      !) add 40
      2) going from C to F multiply by 1.8, going from F to C divide by 1.8
      3) subtract 40

Since the first and third can be done in your head (well maybe not today’s students)
only the second step required any thought.

      • wizzum says:

It is 32 not 40 you need to add or subtract.

        • darrylb says:

wizzum, –wrong — check it out to verify,
The 32 method is another, but sometimes confusing because
one conversion involves a quantity and one does not

        • The 32 method is not confusing. Take the number of degrees above the melting point. If it’s 56 F that’s 24 F above the melting point. Multiply that by 5/9 and you have your answer. If it’s 50 C that means 50 C above the melting point, which is 90 F above the melting point which is 122 F.

          Really simple.

      • shazaam says:

That’s a slick method. I always used the classic subtract 32 from F / 1.8 and add 32 to C * 1.8…… Your method works very nicely for mental arithmetic. (sadly that art/talent seems to have gone with the slide-rules)

However I was poking fun at their incessant color inflation of the temperature maps. It’s becoming painfully obvious that they want the temperatures to look as hot as possible.

I suppose if that temperature map were colored with the standard scales of the 70’s and 80’s it would be mostly shades of yellow with a little orange (red used to start at 90°F) and thus wouldn’t scare anyone into funding any climate “science”.

        • darrylb says:

          shazaam
To this day, I am thankful that I had to use a slide rule.
Using it involved only manipulation of digits, the decimal place
had to be kept in your head.
In doing so, one is always estimating a logical value.
Also, most of the time (in physics problems) was doing the math.
Therefore, a person had to keep in mind the flow or sequence of the
problem while doing the more time consuming math.

If you want a challenge, try finding a cube root of a complex number
          on a slide rule.

      • I multiply by 2. Close enough to 1.8 for most purposes.

        • Doug says:

          This. And then subtract a tenth of that if you need to be more precise. e.g. 30 x 2 = 60 – 6 = 54. Much easier than 1.8.

        • darrylb says:

In my world, it was necessary to always be precise as possible.
A factor of 2 is good for determining if you need to wear a jacket.

  5. darrylb says:

Repeating myself from before. The Atlantic Multidecadel Oscillation is showing more and more signs of going from its positive (warm) phase to the negative phase, particularly in the North Atlantic.
It should mean that the Arctic will gradually be getting more ice and if ocean currents shift in turn, there may be a reduction in Antarctic sea ice. Of course, the AMO is not the only factor.

  6. Jay says:

    I’m optimistic but I wouldn’t call 8 weeks a few.

  7. MrX says:

“ramp up the lies”? How is that possible considering the 100% lies coming from them now? When is peak lies? lol

  8. David A says:

Someone recently posted an article on a retraction of a gay marriage paper. In going there, and reading the comments, it is a highly alarmist group of “educated” folk, all slamming skeptics as “gravity deniers’
At any rate my comments are so far going through on second submittal. If anyone wishes to engage the alarmists, (sometimes it is healthy to go into the den) please join the discussion here.

    • gator69 says:

Yes, because ice never melted before the 20th century. Dunce.

An idiot, dolt, dullard or (archaically) mome is an intellectually disabled person, or someone who acts in a self-defeating or significantly counterproductive way. The similar terms moron, imbecile, and cretin have all gained specialized meanings in modern times. An idiot is said to be idiotic, and to suffer from idiocy. A dunce is an idiot who is specifically incapable of learning.

      https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Idiot

      • cfgj says:

Well, the ice loss from Greenland did accelerate a lot since the early 1990s. Do skeptics have some models that indicate these are part of “natural cycles”?

        • gator69 says:

Skeptics do not need models to know that ice melts during an interglacial.

If you want to offer a model that shows otherwise, you will need to first list all climate forcings, order them from most to least effective, and then quantify them.

Once this is done then feel free to provide even one peer reviewed paper that refutes natural variability as the cause of recent, or any, global climate changes.

There is nothing unusual or unprecedented about our climate, or how we got here. For 4,500,000,000 years climates have always changed, naturally. This means there has been a set precedent, and the burden of proof falls on natural climate change deniers like yourself.

        • AndyG55 says:

The very fact that for most of the last 10,000 years the Green land temperatures have been considerably higher and is still all there, means that you really should STOP PANICKING about a small amount of totally natural melting.

Hint.. Its SUMMER. ice melts. and at a very precise threshold temperature.

The slight warming from the series of strong solar maxima was obviously enough to push a small amount of surface ice to that threshold.

Sure there may be a few hundred years over the LIA that it never got anywhere near warm enough, but the Arctic is still very much at the cold end of the current interglacial.

We should be very thankful of the small amount of warming we have had.

So please, cfnt , GROW UP and stop getting all DISTRAUGHT and weepy about NATURAL cycles and events that we can do absolutely nothing about.

        • bit chilly says:

really ? can you show me the corresponding acceleration of global sea level rise ?

  9. cfgj says:

So why did the ice suddenly start melting and running to the ocean more rapidly in the 1990s? The change was rather drastic and coincides with a local rise of atmospheric and ocean temperatures. Why did the arctic warm so rapidly? Little ice age ended about 100 years ago so that’s not a viable explanation.

ps. if you want to argue the change is “natural” you need to list all natural cycles and their causes

    • gator69 says:

So why did the ice suddenly start melting and running to the ocean more rapidly in the 1990s?

Because the Earth had been warming for two decades. How stupid are you?

if you want to argue the change is “natural” you need to list all natural cycles and their causes

Bullsh!t! If you want to claim warming is human caused then you need to list all climate forcings, order them from most to least effective, and then quantify them. Until you do that you cannot identify which forcings are responsible.

All I have to say is that for 4,500,000,000 years climates have always changed, naturally. This means there has been a set precedent, and the burden of proof falls on natural climate change deniers like yourself.

Obviously you have never heard of Occam’s Razor.

    • rah says:

Since the melting has happened before several times during mankinds time on this earth it is YOU and your ilk that must provide the PROOF that man is causing it or any other change in the climate.

I really am sick of you pasty faced city slickers that never spent a night alone in the woods, let alone weeks in a wilderness surviving by your own means and metal preaching about how you know so much about the environment.

    • AndyG55 says:

“Why did the arctic warm so rapidly?”

It didn’t. According to satellite data the warmest Arctic anomalies were in 1981.

The 1990 melt was caused by a WEATHER event. !

1990 was actually a cooler period.. with most Arctic warming at about 1994,95

The meaningless linear trend from 1979 to now is 0.23ºC per decade for the Arctic.

Do you really think that is SCARY or unprecedented ! ????

Since the 2010 El Nino, the Arctic has been COOLING at 1ºC/decade

    • AndyG55 says:

“with most Arctic warming at about 1994,95”

That was badly stated.. If you look at the graph of UAH Arctic temps, around 1995 there is a sort of jump to a slightly warmer plateau. Even so, the highest anomalies are around 1981.

Its interesting that the 1998 El Nino doesn’t stick out at all, with the spike then cooling from the 2005 and 2010 are clearly evident.

Those interested can download from Roy’s site and do the graphing work themselves. 🙂

    • bit chilly says:

go and have a look at the temperatures of the arctic in the satellite era on the dmi website ,then come back and tell us you stand by that statement.

    • What evidence is there that the Arctic has warmed?? That 2015 Arctic is unusual??

Amundsen crossed the Arctic in a shoddy wooden vessel 100 years ago… today Climate Scientists get trapped in the ice … need to be rescued by huge steel diesel powered icebreakers…

You sound a bit like Jim Hunt… the Beaufort Bullshitter … 🙂 …
