Before General Custer carried the Union Flag to massacre Native Americans, he was one of Abraham Lincoln’s heroes at Gettysburg and Appomattox.
On June 29, 1863 Custer was commissioned to brigadier general of volunteers and assigned to command a brigade in Kilpatrick’s division. While in this position he led his men in the Battle of Gettysburg where he assisted in preventing J.E.B. Stuart from attacking the Union rear.
As Custer’s final major act in the war he led the division responsible for cutting off Lee’s last avenue of escape at Appomattox; a week later he received the appointment, major general of volunteers.
The Union flag is clearly a symbol of hatred and aggression against Native Americans, and must be taken down from all statehouses which fly it.

Custer was an excellent Calvary commander. Calvary commanders have to aggressive. But his never ending quest for accolades and fame led to his and a good part of the 7th Cavs demise.
But one aspect of Custer’s last stand needs to be considered more than it is. That is the US Army and it’s seemingly ever lasting belief that it can economize on ammo by denying the individual soldier rapid fire capability in their standard issue battle rifles. The Springfield model 1873 “trap door” carbine Custers men carried was certainly not the best option for rapid fire available at the time. Then 20 odd years later the primary issue rifle was the Springfield model 1892 better known as the Krag–Jørgensen Rifle. A bolt action rifle markedly inferior in every way to the Mausers being used by the enemy. The Army tried the same kind of trick in the 1980s as the cold war wound down when it issued the M 16 A2 with three round burst capability to replace the A1 which had full automatic.
Having attended many many Hi/Byes as an officer’s wife during the Vietnam era, I know the soldier were not at all happy with the backseat driving of the Politicians. As one sergeant put it, “If they want to win the war then give us our heads and we WILL WIN the WAR!”
(I generally hung around with the sergeants at the gatherings because they talked of cars and hunting dogs instead of diapers and dishes.)

We talked shop more than anything else at our Team Parties. That is when we weren’t half jokingly knocking each other for our individual perceived weaknesses or screw ups. On a really good team and in fact in any great small unit IMO that is the way it is. You can pile on one of your team mates for screwing up or for a weakness and it is not taken an insult but as a kind of critique and makes the individual subjected to it work that much harder to correct his deficiencies. It works wonders when there is already a good foundation of mutual respect between the core members of the team. And the leaders, be they officers or enlisted, are not immune either.

A customer of mine told me he parked his brand new car in the RDU airport parking garage only to have it not start. Turns out without a GPS signal the car shuts down.
