Serious Trouble For Arctic Alarmists

The Northern Passage (along the Siberian Coast) has been cloudy and cold for weeks, and is not melting. It is very unlikely it will open this year, and very likely that multi-year ice will return to the area this winter.

Bad news for the Polar Ocean Challenge. Currently 3 days late leaving Murmansk, they are expecting on 25th July 2016, approximately sail pass North East Passage ice choke point, Cape Chelyuskin.

There is plenty of ice choking the route there now and only 10 days left for it to become passable in a sailboat.

The polarocean’s posts are boring but enlightning with details of their playing with Lego and model plane building.
I am looking forward to the Polarbozo’s coming encounter with the ice ;-)

Well things are certainly will have to change if ‘Crystal Serenity’ is going to have a chance of making it through in August. Perhaps another leading ice breaker should be added to ensure it can make it through the NW passage. I have the feeling there is a whole lot more riding on their attempt than just the prestige of the cruise line and so would not be surprised if they got more government support than the two ice breakers and helicopters they already have lined up.

Forecast across the arctic basin for the next week looks to put low pressure on the Canadian side, with high pressure moving along the Russian side. A week of south winds in the western arctic will now become northerly for the upcoming week. Cold cloudy conditions across the Canadian Archipelago as well. The models are trending towards low pressure dominating the basin for the last week of the month, so we’ll see how that goes.

High pressure is also forecast to continue over Greenland. That’ll keep it colder in the interior, and keep the melt down as it has been so far this month.
