Magical Graphs!

DMI shows Arctic sea ice extent falling sharply over the last few days, with almost 5% of the ice melted in just a few days.

NSIDC maps show nothing happening in the Arctic over the last few days.

I wonder where the magical DMI 5% ice loss comes from?

DMI is a big source for many of your arctic posts. If we start doubting their numbers, what have we left to assess the state of the area?

  2. Scott Koontz says:

So you love this source when it suits you, and distrust it when you can’t decipher what happened.

How is it that the earth is cooling according to all of your posts (at least those very specific stations for specific months) and yet the ice keeps melting?

    comparing apples and pears again.

Here is an NSIDC extent chart:

with extent charts you also need to check if they are actual or averaged over a period.

      Griff,

My bet’s still on. I’m even willing to make it a progressive bet. $1 this year, doubling each year for the nine years thereafter (which comes to a little more than $1000). The bet is that the ice extent won’t go below 4M km**2.

We could also make a bet as to whether the Crystal Serenity will be able to make it through the NW passage in a given year and/or make it through without the help of icebreakers. Let’s make it the latter. Surely if the ice is relentlessly melting away, that would still be an easy win for you.

No-one has been through the Prince of Wales Strait since 1944,

It remains impassable., blocked either in the strait itself or in the Melville Trough area.

Larsen did TWO trips through in 1944 in a small, low-powered wooden hulled boat.

        • rw says:

          ???
Is this an attempt to contradict my statement about the Crystal Serenity? Are you saying that because the Prince of Wales Strait has been closed since 1944 that the Crystal Serenity didn’t go thru the NW passage in 2016?
Are you familiar with the term”non sequitur”?

Griff may be a fool, but this is flat-out weird.

    • AndyG55 says:

Why do you continue to DENY that Arctic sea ice extent is still way above that of the MWP and the 9000 years of the interglacial before that

Why do you continue to DENY that the LIA was a COLD ANOMALY, and that we are lucky to have had a slight partial RECOVERY toward more normal Holocene extent.

DENIAL of climate history is like a shared nappy for you both. !!

Just remember NCIS data is all ice in northern hemisphere

    The jet stream.

If you look at the graphic (which is from 8 May) you can see the north bound jet stream hitting in the Bering Sea, Newfoundland and east of Spitzbergen – exactly where the ice loss is in your diagram.

The loopy jet stream is classic for solar minimum conditions, which we’re now in (link from winter 2010 in the last solar minimum). None of the climatistas have been able to connect sinuous Rossby waves to CO2.

    • Griff says:

That is utter nonsense – because the 2 previous years were among the lowest on record. All that shows is ice not as low as the lowest…

If you had a chart going back to 1980 it would reveal just how dramatically low volume now is…

This one shows 2018 as second lowest and quite a bit down on 2010
      http://psc.apl.uw.edu/wordpress/wp-content/uploads/schweiger/ice_volume/BPIOMASIceVolumeAnomalyCurrentV2.1_CY.png

The format and limited date range of DMI graphs are being deliberately used to conceal the truth…

      • AndyG55 says:

“All that shows is ice not as low as the lowest…”

Nowhere near it lowest. probably about the same as around the 1940s and FAR higher than the Holocene average.

Its still in the top 10% of the last 10,000 years, griff.

STOP DENYING HISTORIC CLIMATE CHANGE. !

Why do you think the only “important” time is the very brief period you have been alive. ??

And WHY do you HATE the Arctic residents so much that you wish them back with the EXTREMES HIGHS of the 1970s.

Your despite for others knows no bounds.

  7. RAH says:

LOL! The PMI graph shows 2018 volume to be greater than the 2016 volume and equal to the 2017 volume. While the DMI graph shows volume to be above all previous years up to 2015.

BOTH show an increased ice volume over recent previous years. Thus both show the amount of Arctic ice is increasing. While the PIOMAS ice volume anomaly shows 2018 right at the 2011 level:

And it seem that everyone but you knows that using 1979-80 as a base to judge the present or any data that uses a mean starting that winter is misleading.
