Advancing Alaskan Glacier

The Margerie Glacier in Alaska is nearly identical to what it looked like in 1941, and has been advancing for the past couple of decades.

Margerie Glacier 1941-2003

Margerie Glacier is about 1-mile wide, with an ice face that is about 250 feet high above the waterline, but with its base about 100 feet below sea level. The glacier is about 21 miles long and extends into snow-fields in the Fairweather Range where elevations exceed 9000 feet. The ice flows about 2000 feet per year, or about 6 feet per day. It has been advancing about 30 feet per year for the past couple of decades.

    Cherrypickers rejoice! 😀 😀

  2. cfgjd says:

It is know through global observation that 90%+ of the worlds glaciers are retreating. It’s funny how fraudulent tampering of temperature data sets by NASA/NOAA have caused widespread loss of glacier ice + the arctic sea ice DEATH SPIRAL 😀 😀

    • Wow! Now they replaced
      print ”Cherrypickers rejoice!”

      with
      print ”DEATH SPIRAL”

cfgjd Yes, you are correct, but as usual what you say is only half of the story. Is that cherry picking?
So, the rest of the story.——
Glaciers have been retreating since the heart of Little Ice Age. Also, what is rarely if ever mentioned is that in some locations, as they retreat tree stumps are being uncovered. The medieval warm period, a time in which the world flourished, and more wine was produced in England than France, and the Vikings farmed Greenland and 100’s of well documented events worldwide have been produced showed what happens during warm periods, The heart of the period was a thousand years ago.
Then came the Little Ice Age, The Vikings left Greenland and attacked various European locations, and again many perilous events worldwide were documented
The first IPCC report documented that temperature record.
But the AGW gang had to get rid of all that history and along came Mikey Mann with
a dubious study using as a main factor Bristle Cone trees in Colorado and N. California.
The long growing twisted trees were deemed by many not suitable for temperature record research. Nevertheless, the result of the method produced the famous hockey stick graph. The method used, principal components, was not appropriate, but it allowed all other measurements to not be a factor.
But wait, the results showed a recent decline in temperature. So, the infamous ‘Hide the Decline, also known as Mikey’s nature trick in which the graph was truncated and current temperatures, which in themselves were dubiously found, were tacked on the end and the bristle cone findings for recent years not presented.
And the warmists celebrated their Golden Calf,—-well make that the Hockey Stick.

Much more could be added here, but cfgid, please don’t write about cherry picking unless you write the full story.
I have seen and read too much of cherry picking .

Please don’t boggle cfgid’s mind with the facts. You are liable to send him off a cliff. Plus, I was always told it is impolite to criticize someone’s belief in Santa Claus and the tooth fairy.

Poor child-mind, you haven’t learnt one thing in the last 20 years except to be a parrot.

I repeat… because your comprehension skills are so moronically lacking….

During the first 3/4 or so of the Holocene there was little or no Arctic sea ice during summer. It is only because we have had a small recovery from the COLDEST period of the last 10,000 years that Arctic sea ice levels are still so anomalously high.

The ONLY thing in a “death spiral” is your intelligence.. and its dropping off the bottom of the charts.

  3. I spent last Wednesday in Glacier Bay sitting just a couple hundred feet away from the Margerie Glacier for about an hour. It is an incredible sight and the calvings were spectacular.

“It is know through global observation that 90%+ of the worlds glaciers are retreating.” Like so many things thrown out to convince us all that global warming is happening FAST and it is DANGEROUS and you have to do something NOW or ELSE billions will die from blah blah blah blah …. it’s not the entire story. It’s deceptive, and there is no reason for it, other than to try and frighten people.

The 90% figure comes from a very small number of glaciers used as proxies for the world’s glaciers, and all of them are easy to observe glaciers, small ones, none of the really large glaciers show rapid decline.

  5. emsnews says:

NONE of the glaciers covering Antarctica are ‘melting’. Pressure from the heavy load of ice in the center is pushing out ice that calves into the sea. And this winter which is slowly ending there right now had epic sea ice, too.

    • Snowleopard says:

      Yes. Very true.
Antarctica contains most of the world’s glacier ice. The few glaciers losing mass there are in West Antarctica which extends north of the Antarctic circle and also has a range of active volcanoes under the ice. Antarctica is gaining ice because most of it does not warm to the freezing point even in summer.

Greenland also is gaining ice most years. Though some years (like 2012) there is a small net loss.

So while most of the world’s glaciers may be “melting” in early September or even YOY currently, most of the world’s glacier ice is not melting but gaining mass YOY.

Consider that the early Holocene had temperatures 4-6C higher than today for thousands of years. The icecaps survived that, and they will survive any plausible upcoming climate in the remainder of the Holocene. At this stage of the insolation cycle, it would likely take a “nearby” supernova to melt them.

Glaciers outside of Antarctica and Greenland are mostly under 4ky old. They usually advance during cold periods and retreat during warm periods. (The exceptions being mostly high altitude glaciers more dependent on precipitation levels than temperature) Since we are nearing the end of this warm period, we are witnessing the maximum retreat phase of many of these glaciers.

This is a natural cycle. It will continue and these glaciers will mostly be growing again within a decade.
