Scientists : Sea Level To Rise Six Metres In The Next 30 Years!

Scientists warned on Wednesday that the Antarctic ice shelf was in danger of melting due to global warming and warned sea global levels could rise up to six metres within one full generation. Ministers and senior officials from 24 nations gathered on the vast frozen Antarctic wastes, issuing an impassioned plea to safeguard the world’s last true wilderness.

Greenpeace says that human generated CO2 made this crack in the ice.

“Ministers and senior officials from 24 nations gathered on the vast frozen Antarctic wastes..”

If they’re so vast and frozen, what’s the problem? ..and did they gather there to make sure no-one steals the ice and puts it in the ocean?

    “..world’s last true wilderness”

Well it would be if one were really close-minded.

Your starter for ten is: If all the sea ice in the world melts tomorrow, how far would sea levels rise?

    a) 1 meter
    b) 100 meters
    c) 10 meters
    d) we don’t know
    e) It won’t rise a single mm

    From the IB Times…

“Aerial photographs taken in February and March 2002 of parts of the Larsen B shelf in the Antarctic show different aspects of the final stages of the collapse that has reignited fears of global warming and its catastrophic effects. The pictures show (clockwise from top left) the shelf breaking up near Foca Nunatak, a rift in the ice sheet near Cape Desengano, a cascade of water from melting ice nearly 30 meters high along the front of the shelf, and the new front edge of the shelf breaking up near Cape Foyn. About 500 billion tons of ice of the Larsen B shelf have disintegrated over the last month, the result of 50 years of sharp temperature rises on the Antarctic Peninsula unmatched elsewhere on the ice continent and in the rest of the world.”

Are we comparing February/March photos with those of June? I mean it is Greensleaze afterall. And even they admit it is a local issue (local warmists), and is not seen elsewhere.

Six metres is awfully deep water.

We need to get all of the names of all involved. The ‘scientists warned on Wednesday…’ because,
    well.
    Six metres divided by 30 years = 0.2 m
    Answer: 0.2 m = 7.87401 ”

Eight inches of sea level rise per year for the next thirty.
That’s unadulterated bullshit. So these are not scientists, and we need their names in case they ever try to pass themselves off as such again.

Many people who believe this type of stuff have short memories and are also very forgiving of the false predictions and other mistakes their leaders make.

Academics now teach that there was no real threat from communism to the West during the last century. It was just a “red scare” foisted on us by the likes of McCarthy and other right wingers. Never mind the tens of millions killed and the millions more enslaved by Lenin, Stalin. Mao, Pol Pot et al.

If they can forget how evil communism was some will also be able to forget how wrong the AGW alarmists were, even though the records are there and it’s directly proven to them.

Careful, Pointing out the communist do/did bad things will be labeled as “red baiting” by certain liberal trash.

It would be important to understand what they mean by “Full Generation”. In my parents time a generation was 14 to 15 years and an old maid was a woman over 16 who was not married. In my youth it was 18 years.
    From WIKI:
It is important to distinguish between familial and cultural generations. Some define a familial generation as the average time between a mother’s first offspring and her daughter’s first offspring. For much of human history the average generation length has been determined socially by the average age of women at first birth, about 16 years. This is due to the place it holds in the family unit economics of committing resources towards raising of children, and necessitating greater productivity from the parents, usually the male. With greater industrialisation and demand for cheap female labour, urbanisation, delayed first pregnancy, a greater uncertainty in relationship stability have all contributed to the increase of the generation length through the late-18th to the late-20th centuries. These changes can be attributed to both societal level factors, such as GDP and state policy, and related individual level variables, particularly a woman’s educational attainment.[2] In developed nations the average familial generation length is in the high 20s and has even reached 30 years in some nations.[3] As of 2008, the average generation length in the United States was 25 years, up 3.6 years since 1970[4]. Germany saw the largest increase in generation length over that time period, from 24 years in 1970 to 30 years in 2008.[3] Conversely, generation length has changed little and remains in the low 20s in less developed nations.
Being an old foggy I still think of a generation as being 20 years roughly.
Finding this claim in a research paper shows TonyD that he is still wrong. Manhattan is going to drown any day now according to Greenpeace. We all know that Greenpeace is a highly reputable organization whose work is used in the IPCC reports without peer review!

From the photo caption- “A colony of Adelie penguins settled on a rocky spur above ice melt pools gather in front of the Ross Sea ice shelf in Antarctica January 27. Scientists warned on Wednesday that the Antarctic ice shelf was in danger of melting due to global warming and warned sea global levels could rise up to six metres within one full generation.”

I interpret this to mean a 6 metre sea level rise within one full generation of Adelie
penguins. Their life expectancy is 10 – 15 years.

That works out to 6000/15 = 400 mm/year sea level rise.

      • chris y says:

FYI, that is about a factor of 1000 higher than current sea level rise.
        What a coincidence!
That’s about the same factor of exaggeration as the Hiroshima bomb analogy highlighted by Joe Romm a few days ago.
I think a new self-consistent picture is starting to emerge…

“So these are not scientists, and we need their names in case they ever try to pass themselves off as such again.”

Greenpeace has never been about the science. They are just a bunch of hippies who never grew a brain as they got older. Its the organization which should be just ignored, but for some reason, the media gives them attention over and over.

As for the individuals, yes we should keep a list of “idiots”. As long as you can find scientist A and idiot assertion he made at time A, we can say we will remember.

  7. chris y says:

    According to peerless Greenpeace,
“About 500 billion tons of ice of the Larsen B shelf have disintegrated over the last month,…”
Sounds really big. This is about 500 km^3 of ice.
Antarctica has somewhere between 25,000,000 and 30,000,000 km^3 of ice.
Greenpeace is whining about a volume of ice equal to about 20 parts per million.
500 GT of ice melting gives about 1.4 mm of sea level rise.
Hey, its a falsifiable prediction. We should see a step increase in sea level of 1.4 mm very shortly.
I’m going to the Gulf of Mexico shore today. I’ll check for beach damage caused by the rise…

    • chris y says:

Just back from the beach. Here’s the data for today.
Water level at Indian Rocks Beach, FL, 3 pm- 2.7 feet
Water level at Indian Rocks Beach, FL, 8 pm- 0.4 feet

      Sea level rate of change = -2.3 feet/5 hours = -2.337 mm/minute (based on in-situ micrometer measurements)

No sign of Larsen Ice shelf disintegration’s impact on sea level.
      Happy 4th to all!

Take note that the scientists mentioned were not identified.

Also, a generatiion” has multiple meanings. Although the common useage of the word applies to birth to birth generations, the word is occasionally used to refer to a human lifespan.
