While there was a drought, much like what happened decades prior to the 1930s, it was made worse by the over-plowing encouraged by the Federal Government years before. This resulted in the dust bowl which persisted until the 40s when the rains came back. Read “The Worst Hard Times”. In the mid 30s there was a dust-storm that occurred on “Black Friday” that was so big and overpowering that it put a layer of dirt all the way to NYC. This put the fear of God in the politicians and FDR.
