Many religions believe that bad weather is punishment for man’s sins. The most famous example is Noah’s flood.
Today’s most enlightened academics also believe that bad weather is the result of human’s sins. They consider themselves intellectually superior to those ignorant religious people with the identical belief.

Science began with the Pre-Socratics and Lucretius refuting the claims that humans were responsible for the weather. When the NCSE reasserts this priest-craft it departs from the company of science.
Let’s clarify that. Christians believe that entropy (death) entered the Universe because of man’s sin. Before man sinned there was no entropy as God had made things ‘Good’. That is not saying that there was no weather; it was just not prone to being out of control.
And your entirely correct, modern man is simply replacing established religion with one of his own. Man is prone to do this because men as a whole can be rather unwise. It was not a compliment when Jesus called us sheep.
Science is simply the ability to explain the natural using the process of reasoning, observation, hypothesis and testing. They have not nor never will have ‘discovered’ anything. They ‘uncover’. (Engineers however, have ‘discovered’ and invented many wonderful things using scientific knowledge.) Their knowledge is limited because they are fish in the aquarium and they cannot get outside the aquarium. Therefore science continually gets in over its head be getting into questions it cannot answer such as:
Why are we here?
How did we get here?
Where are we going?
Scientist who wish to use science to answer the questions above stop becoming Scientist and have become Priest. They want to become Priest because they want the ability to influence (and sadly) control peoples lives the way Priests are able to. Therefore they abandon scientific principals and establish a religion.
God subjected all creation to vanity (selfishness) unwillingly while at the same time he subjected it to hope (in Jesus the DNA of God in all men). Go does this according to his will, not man’ s will. Man cannot chose by act of his will to change God’ s plan. We all have two DNA’ s, the DNA of the devil and the DNA of Christ from the moment we are conceived in out mother’ s womb. We are all like the strange case of Dr. Jekyl and Mr Hyde. We are all God’ s workmanship created in Christ Jesus unto good works. Jesus was manifested on earth to destroy the works of the devil. This happened on the cross of Calvary and it also happens in every human being when the Christ DNA matures (like Dr. Jekly) and overcomes (bruises the head) the matured devil DNA in every man (like Mr. Hyde)
