No Christmas lights needed here!

Fred Reines won the Nobel Prize in Physics (and the associated million dollars) in 1995 for detecting neutrinos, but he made a mistake in 1956 which long delayed his award.

My father worked with Reines, and told me this story yesterday at dinner. Reines published a paper in 1956 about his neutrino experiments, but failed to make any mention of possible error in his calculations. As it turned out, his calculations were off by a factor of two – which lead to mistrust in the physics community. Eventually Reines overcame the mistrust and did win the Nobel Prize, but by 1995 he was already suffering dementia and wasn’t able to fully enjoy it.

Michael Mann believes he already won the Nobel Prize, despite an error in his hockey stick of ~?. Mann could gain a little respect by admitting that his hockey stick is complete garbage.

Perhaps dementia has already set in?  Maybe we should give Mann a million dollar bill, to make him feel better.

Christmas Eve temperatures have plummeted in the US since the 1920’s.

On Christmas Eve 1955, temperatures in Texas, Kansas and Oklahoma approached 90 degrees, and it was over 80 degrees in Colorado, California, Arizona, Arkansas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama and Florida.

On Christmas Eve in 1964, it was 80 degrees in Nebraska, 69 degrees in Pennsylvania and Indiana, 62 degrees in New York, 71 degrees in West Virginia, 68 degrees in Ohio and Illinois, and 73 degrees in Kentucky.

Climate experts¹ say Middle East refugees² are being driven by a harmless trace gas – rather than the massive bombing³.

December 23 temperatures have declined in the US over the past century. On this date in 1933 it was 80 degrees in Virginia and California, 84 degrees in Texas, and 71 degrees in Illinois and Ohio. Most of the US was over 60 degrees.

LONDON: Sunspots, rather than “greenhouse” gases from the burning of fossil fuels, may be responsible for the rise in global temperatures in the past 200 years, it was claimed on Wednesday.

Astronomers at Armagh Observatory in Northern Ireland have studied meteorological records going back to 1795, which point to a strong link between air temperatures on Earth and solar activity.

It is not the number of sunspots which affects the Earth’s climate, according to Dr Butler, but the length of the sunspot cycle. This averages about 11 years, but periods when the cycle becomes shorter correspond to greater solar activity and greater energy output.

Dr Butler pointed out that during the past 20 years, the solar cycle has been abnormally short (about 9.6 years) and the Earth’s weather abnormally warm. On the other hand, a period in the late 17th century known as “The Little Ice Age” when the Thames froze in winter, correspond ed with an abnormally long solar cycle, when sunspots virtually stopped for about 60 years.
