Warm January Days Used To Be Much More Common In The US

January 70 degree days used to be much more common in the US. There were spikes around 1910 and 1950. In January 1950, almost one day out of eight in the US reached 70F.

The areal coverage of 70 degree days also peaked around 1910 and 1950. In January 1950, almost half of the US reached 70F.

On January 25, 1950 about half of the US was over 60F, and most of the rest was below 0F. Temperatures ranged from -45F (-43C) at Glasgow, Montana to 90F (32C) at Rio Grande, Texas and Greenville, Mississippi.

The US experienced a 135 degree spread across the US on the same day. Experts say that a two degree temperature change would kill us all. New Mexico experienced a 79 degree spread that day.

In January 1906, 70% of US stations reached 60F.

Colorado Cold Streaks

We just ended eight days of continuously below freezing weather in Boulder. It was the longest cold snap since 1983 – which was caused by the eruption of El Chichón.

The longest stretch within a calendar year below freezing in the lower 48 states was at Hermit, Colorado during the Ice Age Scare in 1975.  Every day until sometime in at least April was below freezing. Unfortunately there is no data from April, so I don’t know exactly how long the streak lasted.

2015 Was One Of The Coolest Years On Record In The US

Government climate experts say that the US is getting much hotter, but the exact opposite is true. Both the number of hot days and the areal extent of heatwaves in the US is plummeting.

In 1936 nearly 80% of US stations reached 100 degrees, but the the past three years have been closer to 30%. A massive decline.

The frequency 100 degree days has plummeted from 5% in 1936 to about 1% in recent years.

The frequency of 90 degree days has also plummeted from 15% in 1936, down to 9% in 2015.

Most of the time when you hear a climate statistic from a government expert, it is pretty safe to assume that the exact opposite is true,

1964 Global Cooling Arctic Spike Was Larger Than 2015

In the early 1960’s the Guardian was warning its readers about the coming ice age.

Wisconsin Climate Becoming Much Milder

2015-12-31-13-43-47

The frequency of extreme temperatures (hot and cold) in Wisconsin has plummeted since 1988 when NASA’s James Hansen warned that extreme temperatures would increase.

In 1936, almost one day out of five was either over 90F or below 0F. Recently the frequency of extreme temperatures has been about half of 1936.
