Summer cyclone chewing up Canada’s Arctic sea ice

Back when the sea was thick and lasted for years, cyclones tended to spread the ice out and actually increase its extent, said Julienne Stroeve of the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo. Now, when ice gets spread out, it simply breaks up and disappears.

“As our ice cover has thinned, some of our old rules are changing,” said Stroeve.

Looking at the graph below I am having a tough time locating the disappearing part.

Looks like a typical day at the beach in Northern California

Mankind has a long history of people who were absolutely convinced that survival depends on everyone else adopting their belief system.

Now it looks like this :

Apparently their community standards prohibit anyone telling the truth.

The 1965 flood was the most extensive flood in Colorado’s history, but I wasn’t living in Colorado at the time. I was in Los Alamos, New Mexico and the road washed out between Los Alamos and Santa Fe after weeks of endless rain. For close to a year, the only way to get to Santa Fe was to drive north to Espanola and then back south to Santa Fe.

I am enjoying reading these old newspaper articles, because it jogs my memory about things I hadn’t thought about for decades.

Just over a month ago, the LA Times told us that New Mexico’s ecosytems would never recover from the drought.

nowhere is it worse than in New Mexico. In this parched state, the question is no longer how much worse it can get but whether it will ever get better — and, ominously, whether collapsing ecosystems can recover even if it does.
