No mention in the press of the record cold at the North Pole, the large increase in Arctic ice extent over last year, or the record Antarctic ice extent.

Instead they made up a fake story about the North Pole melting and spread it all over the Internet.

Recently, concerns were raised over the supposed melting North Pole after webcam photos captured an ice-covered image in late April and a less-frosty, lake-looking photo in late July, in an article originally published by The Atlantic.

After Ferrell followed up with the North Pole Environmental Conservatory, he received an email reply stating that ‘”Given the excitement over recent images, we are putting the following write up with the images on our web site.”

The write-up clarifies that “The formation of melt ponds has always been a key feature of the summer season on sea ice.”

Additionally, they wrote, “…Melt ponds form every year, and considering Web Camera 1, the melt pond coverage at this location (the cameras and buoys have drifted to about 85°N, 5°W) looks pretty typical for this time of year and this location.”

Are climate sceptics the real champions of the scientific method?

Since climate change came to prominence in 1988, the role of scientific knowledge – especially an idea of scientific consensus – has played a starring role in the ensuing academic enquiry/political debate/trench warfare (delete as preferred).

Beyond a depressingly binary characterisation of simply pro or anti-science, I’d argue sceptics cannot simply be written off as anti-science or conspiracy theorists (although I am sure one or two may fall into that category). Rather, they see themselves as upholding the standards of what they’d call “real science”.

One of the stupidest claims in climate science, originally pushed by the constantly stoned Carl Sagan, is that increasing CO2 will lead to a runaway greenhouse effect.

This is a spectacularly stupid concept. The only IR bands which are not saturated are ones which CO2 doesn’t affect.
