A Simple Plan To Save The Planet

ScreenHunter_370 Jul. 29 09.06

The president tells us that the excessive lifestyle Americans enjoy, is destroying the climate. He knows this because it was hot in DC one afternoon a few weeks ago, and because there was a hurricane last year.

NOAA tells him that last year was the second most extreme year on record, based on a nonsensical statistic which counted mild winter days as  being “extreme” – twice.

The solution is simple. Evil American energy companies produce fossil fuel, because evil Americans keep buying it. If all progressives (particularly at universities) would simply disconnect (I prefer the word “divest“) their transportation, heating and electrical systems from the fossil fuel powered grid, they could save the planet.

If progressives really cared, they would do this. The power is in their hands to save Gaia.

The Mildew Drought Of 2013

The US Drought Monitor says that we are having a drought in Fort Collins, which is remarkable because it is raining every day, is the greenest anyone has ever seen it at the end of the July, and the constant dampness is starting to produce mildew.

I’m just back from a bicycle ride in the fog, where I had to dodge gravel washed out on the road from yesterday’s deluge.

Yesterday was the 17th anniversary of the Spring Creek flood, and we had a mini flood on Spring Creek with a bike trail bridge submerged for a couple of hours.

Rebuked By The Pope, The Met Office Offers Penance

ScreenHunter_366 Jul. 29 07.22

A new set of studies from the British government’s Meteorological Office has addressed the claims by climate change skeptics that global warming has “stopped” or “paused” or is “slowing down.”

The Met Office’s response is a trio of reports that, in style and length, resembles a set of ‘Climate Cliff Notes,’ and which, taken in order, provide a step-by-step assessment of the skeptical claims.

There is actually a multitude of measurements: of atmospheric concentrations of carbon dioxide and other greenhouse gases; of atmospheric water vapor; of air temperature near the ground, in the lower atmosphere, and in the stratosphere; of changes in glacier mass balance and polar sea ice; of sea level rise and, importantly, changes in the heat content of the ocean. The accumulation of evidence from all these observations points unhesitatingly to a warming planet.

Rowers Barely Escaped Being Trapped By Ice On July 24

On July 24, the rowers miraculously traveled 30 km into the wind with their GPS turned off.

We rounded the tip of the Tuktoyaktuk Peninsula after two weeks of hard effort, sand bars and unfriendly winds.

The Test

Had they not performed that superhuman feat, they would have been stuck behind the ice the next day and their trip would be over.

Arctic Scientists Having Difficulty Interpreting Graphs

Arctic cyclone chews up rotten northern sea ice

The Canadian Press July 28, 2013

Cyclones can destroy large amounts of ice very quickly.

“In 2009, we actually documented one of these events in which large, multi-year ice floes — Manhattan-sized — broke up in a matter of minutes,” said Barber.

This year’s storm over the Beaufort Sea formed about mid-week and is expected to die out on the weekend.

It isn’t as strong as last year’s, but the ice is thinner and weaker. As well, the ice has already been pummelled by earlier storms.

Barber said the ice is getting so weak that new categories have had to be created for it.

“We have a whole new class of sea ice in the Arctic, which we’re calling ‘decayed ice,”‘ he said.

“We started seeing it in 2009. It’s extremely weak.”Barber said the research icebreaker CCGS Amundsen can do 13.5 knots in open water. Through decayed ice, it can do 13 knots

Changing sea-ice cover is increasingly being linked to southern weather patterns. The jet stream, which strongly influences weather at mid-latitudes, is driven by temperature differences between the Arctic and the equator, a difference that shrinks with the sea ice.

Ice coverage is slightly about last year’s record low but still well below the 30-year average.

Much remains unknown about the role of Arctic cyclones in the annual freeze-thaw cycle. Back when the sea was thick and lasted for years, cyclones tended to spread the ice out and actually increase its extent, said Julienne Stroeve of the National Snow and Ice Data Center in Boulder, Colo. Now, when ice gets spread out, it simply breaks up and disappears.

“As our ice cover has thinned, some of our old rules are changing,” said Stroeve.

You can see the rotten, decayed ice here. Ice extent is more than double last year’s “record low” and has been moving horizontally for almost a week.
