I normally take the dogs out for a hike in or near the foothills early in the morning and late in the evening. The past few days I have had to wear a down jacket – as we head into Memorial Day weekend.

Q:The warmest temperatures since 1998, which were in 2005 and 2010, have all been pretty similar. How can we explain that we’ve not had a significantly warmer year than 1998 since then?

A: When you look at a short period, it’s hard to have statistically significant warming. But the rate has been less in the past decade than the prior three decades.

It’s normal. There’s no reason to believe that the temperature is going to be linear. There are a couple of reasons to believe it would be less. Since the 1970s we have been measuring the sun very precisely, and we know that this last solar cycle is the weakest of them all.

But there are other factors involved, some of which are not measured very well, including human-made aerosols [which cause cooling].

Then there’s just a natural variability. We’ve had in the last few years two strong La Ninas. That’s just a natural oscillation of tropical temperature. The 1998 El Nino was a record one, and that causes warming. The La Ninas cause a global cooling. When you have a big warming at the beginning and two La Ninas at the end, that tends to give you a negative trend.

Hansen didn’t predict a linear increase in temperature. He predicted an exponential increase in temperature.

Retail Sales Plunge Amid Late Cold Weather

The UK’s economic recovery takes a new knock as official figures show that consumers held on to their cash in April.

Retail sales suffered their biggest monthly drop in a year in April as cold weather and restricted household budgets combined to damage demand on the high street.

The Office for National Statistics (ONS) said retail sales volumes including automotive fuel fell by 1.3% during the month compared to March, compounding economists’ forecasts for a flat performance.

Compared with a year earlier, sales rose by a far less than estimated 0.5%.

Sales of food plunged 4.1% on the month – the worst showing in almost two years – while sales of barbecue food and garden furniture were particularly badly affected as Spring took its time to arrive.

House Republicans pushed through a bill Wednesday to bypass the president to speed approval of the Keystone XL oil pipeline from Canada to Texas. Democrats criticized the legislation as a blatant attempt to allow a foreign company to avoid environmental review.

The bill was approved, 241-175, largely along party lines.

Republicans said the measure was needed to ensure that the long-delayed pipeline, first proposed in 2008, is built.

As Denali National Park shivers through a frigid May, businesses trying to thaw out for summer face freezing pipes and delayed openings as visitors start to arrive at the park.

“It’ll be a story to tell for the next 10 years,” said Dave McCarthy, owner of the Denali Park Salmon Bake in the canyon outside of the park entrance.

A slew of gift shops, hotels, outdoor tours businesses and restaurants outside of the park shutter their doors for the winter and reopen every spring as visitors flock north to see Mount McKinley, the tallest peak in North America.

But this winter won’t let go: Fresh snowfall over the weekend, followed by temperatures in the teens and mid-20s through the weekend culminated with a record low of 14 degrees Saturday morning. The chill disrupted local businesses trying to get their seasons started.
