“Recent severe winters like last year’s or the one of 2005-2006 do not conflict with the global warming picture, but rather supplement it,” explained Vladimir Petoukhov, lead author of the study and a physicist at the Potsdam Institute.
“These anomalies could triple the probability of cold winter extremes in Europe and north Asia,” he said.

Winter is well and truly here as more snow falls across the UK’s north and temperatures plunge across much of the country.

Mike Calnan, the National Trust’s head of gardens and parks, said thepredictions were based on computer models generated by the Met Office Hadley Centre.
‘We looked at gardens in southern France and southern Portugal and, bearing in mind what we can grow in this country in mild locations, we came up with a list of probably things we could grow in the future,’ he said
