Another reminder that the 1930s were much hotter than 2011.

If polar bears had any clue of the scale of speculation about the extinction threat they are facing due to climate change, they would have probably said “you’re kidding, right?”
If you think statistics are a pointer towards the growth or decline of a species, it will be interesting to have a look at the estimates published in a report by U.S. Senate Environment and Public Works Committee, in 2008. “The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service estimates that the polar bear population is currently at 20,000 to 25,000 bears, up from as low as 5,000-10,000 bears in the 1950s and 1960s. A 2002 U.S. Geological Survey of wildlife in the Arctic Refuge Coastal Plain noted that the polar bear populations ‘may now be near historic highs.'”
FREDERICKSBURG, Va. (WUSA) — Eleven-year-old aspiring veterinarian, Skylar Capo, sprang into action the second she learned that a baby woodpecker in her Dad’s backyard was about to be eaten by the family cat.
“I’ve just always loved animals,” said Skylar Capo. “I couldn’t stand to watch it be eaten.”
Skylar couldn’t find the woodpecker’s mother, so she brought it to her own mother, Alison Capo, who agreed to take it home.
“She was just going to take care of it for a day or two, make sure it was safe and uninjured, and then she was going to let it go,” said Capo.
But on the drive home, the Capo family stopped at this Lowes and they brought the bird inside because of the heat. That’s when they were confronted by a woman from the Department of Fish and Wildlife.
…
two weeks later, that same woman from the Department of Fish and Wildlife showed up at the Capo’s front door. This time, Capo says she was accompanied by a state trooper. Alison Capo was cited for unlawfully taking a migratory bird and now she’s been slapped with a $535 fine.

The city of Morehead, Minn., had the dubious distinction as the hottest place on Earth for a day, said meteorologist Heidi Cullen of Climate Central, in an interview on National Public Radio. On July 19, the heat index there — a measure of humidity and temperature that indicates how hot the weather feels — was 134 F (56.7 C). (The National Weather Service later said this reading could be an anomaly due to the local weather station’s location in a very wet field, and not representative of the entire town.)
They claim that July, 2011 was the hottest month ever in Oklahoma City at 89F average temperature.
The closest USHCN station is in Meeker, OK. August 1936 averaged one degree warmer at 90F, and summer temperatures have steadily declined since the 1930s.
As far as high temperatures go, August 1936 was much hotter. This past month averaged 103F for the high – August, 1936 was three degrees warmer at 106F.
Even with UHI, August 1936 was hotter.
