Texas Governor Prays for Rain While Denying Climate Change

As climate change denial has reached a fevered pitch in this country, its presence is becoming undeniable.

Over the past year, there’s been a series of unprecedented events: massive floods in Australia and Pakistan, enormous fires in Russia, never-before-seen strings of tornadoes in the midwest US, fluctuating droughts and downpours in the southeast US – dropping rain in one day that’s usually seen in an entire year.

The Colorado River is headed for a major flood this summer, and a Denver newspaper is worried about reduced stream flows.

Talk about old news. The Interior Department this week determined that global warming will reduce stream flows in wester river basins, reducing the water available to an already thirsty U.S. Southwest.

For years scientists have been issuing warnings like these, and for that same amount of time, the past administration and past congresses have not only ignored those warnings but enthusiastically worked to discredit them.

As the EPA has worked to take control of a country that refuses to believe what is impossible to deny, illogical and misguided deniers have worked hard to become their own undoing.
We are now at the crossroads of disaster. And even at this point, with heatwaves that kill thousands and with the arctic ices melting before our very eyes, former-Vice President Dick Cheney and his ilk scoff at reality and push for exploiting energies that threaten our very existence. Few things in American history parallel such a degree of greed and irresponsibility. Perhaps nothing will.

(Russian) Analysts say Russian meteorological stations cover most of the country’s territory, and that the Hadley Center had used data submitted by only 25% of such stations in its reports. Over 40% of Russian territory was not included in global-temperature calculations for some other reasons, rather than the lack of meteorological stations and observations.

The data of stations located in areas not listed in the Hadley Climate Research Unit Temperature UK (HadCRUT) survey often does not show any substantial warming in the late 20th century and the early 21st century.

Strong La Nina periods average about 15% less rain than strong El Nino periods. All eight periods which averaged less than 25 inches of rain were also ENSO negative.

Google Earth shows that the beaches are fine, and that the inhabited part of the Island ranges from seven feet above sea level to 200 feet above sea level.

Sea level is about 2mm higher than it was seven years ago. It will only take 3,500 years to achieve 1 metre of rise, or 17,500 years to reach Hansen’s five metres this century forecast.

Launched in 2002, Envisat is the largest Earth Observation spacecraft ever built. It carries ten sophisticated optical and radar instruments to provide continuous observation and monitoring of the Earth’s land, atmosphere, oceans and ice caps. Envisat data collectively provide a wealth of information on the workings of the Earth system, including insights into factors contributing to climate change.
