1954 : Scientists Told Congress Arctic Ice May Disappear By 1979

In 1954, experts told Congress the Arctic may be ice free by 1979, but no later than 2004.

17 Jul 1954 – Arctic ice thaws Washington, Fri.

Arctic ice peaked in 1979. As always, the climate scientists had it exactly backwards.

The ice-packed Arctic Ocean might become navigable in another 25 or 50 years if the present “warming-up” tendency the Polar region continued.

They predicted between 1979 and 2004.

  2. The scientists sought funds for research from congress….

  3. The Ol' Seadog. says:

All this nonsense started in 1815 when the Royal Society said the ice had disappeared from the North West Passage. ( orwords to that effect.)

    • gator69 says:

I know I just read about increased geothermal activity in that region being responsible for a regional melt, probably the case here.

Vast ranges of volcanoes hidden under the oceans are presumed by scientists to be the gentle giants of the planet, oozing lava at slow, steady rates along mid-ocean ridges. But a new study shows that they flare up on strikingly regular cycles, ranging from two weeks to 100,000 years–and, that they erupt almost exclusively during the first six months of each year. The pulses–apparently tied to short- and long-term changes in earth’s orbit, and to sea levels–may help trigger natural climate swings. Scientists have already speculated that volcanic cycles on land emitting large amounts of carbon dioxide might influence climate; but up to now there was no evidence from submarine volcanoes. The findings suggest that models of earth’s natural climate dynamics, and by extension human-influenced climate change, may have to be adjusted. The study appears this week in the journal Geophysical Research Letters.

“People have ignored seafloor volcanoes on the idea that their influence is small–but that’s because they are assumed to be in a steady state, which they’re not,” said the study’s author, marine geophysicist Maya Tolstoy of Columbia University’s Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. “They respond to both very large forces, and to very small ones, and that tells us that we need to look at them much more closely.” A related study by a separate team this week in the journal Science bolsters Tolstoy’s case by showing similar long-term patterns of submarine volcanism in an Antarctic region Tolstoy did not study. http://wattsupwiththat.com/2015/02/05/inconvenient-study-seafloor-volcano-pulses-may-alter-climate-models-may-be-wrong/

Guess that USGS guy that settled science with his 7 volcano observation and then made the budget for earth and not allowed to question LOL

Good points! I think some of these non-scientific alarmists who ignore the seafloor probably get all pumped up about astrology and stars which couldn’t possibly be influencing our lives at these distances.

Study finds Arctic seabed afire with lava-spewing volcanoes

The Arctic seabed is as explosive geologically as it is politically judging by the “fountains” of gas and molten lava that have been blasting out of underwater volcanoes near the North Pole.

….The $5-million expedition was financed by the U.S. National Science Foundation and NASA, which hopes to use the know-how gained in its hunt for extraterrestrial life. The scientists sent three unmanned probes down through the ice to explore a 30-kilometre-long stretch of the ridge where a swarm of undersea earthquakes occurred in 1999.….

… In the valley where the two crustal plates are coming apart, which is about 12 kilometres across, they found dozens of distinctive flat-topped volcanoes that appear to have erupted in 1999, producing the layer of dark, smoky volcanic glass on the seabed.

“The scale and magnitude of the explosive activity that we’re seeing here dwarfs anything we’ve seen on other mid-ocean ridges,” says Sohn, who studies ridges around the world. The volume of gas and lava that appears to have blasted out of the Gakkel volcanoes is “much, much higher” than that seen at other ridges….

[And the usual bow to the gods of CAGW]
The scientists say the heat released by the explosions is not contributing to the melting of the Arctic ice, but Sohn says the huge volumes of CO2 gas that belched out of the undersea volcanoes likely contributed to rising concentrations of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere….

        Mid-ocean ridges

…. We have never witnessed an eruption along a mid-ocean ridge, although a few times earthquake swarms have been detected along them (mainly by secret US Navy listening devices). When scientists have investigated soon after, fresh-looking basalt, plumes of hot chemical-laden water, and recently-killed marine organisms have been observed, indicating that an eruption almost certainly had occurred.

    Thanks Steve!

Your second figure explains why KDMI uses 1979 as the starting point for their 20 year “normal” range (+/- 1SD), shown as gray shading.

  6. Jim Brock says:

Check the news article. Critical passage was that “scientists sought funds.” Still that way.

  7. rah says:

BTW on this day (Feb 7th) 1914: “Pursuant to the Convention for Safety at Sea in London, President Woodrow Wilson directed that the Revenue Cutter Service undertake the task of manning the International Ice Patrol. Henceforth, the Revenue Cutter Service and the Coast Guard, with brief respites during both World Wars, served in this capacity.”

Less than a year later the Revenue Cutter Service combined with the US Live Saving Service would become the US Coast Guard.
