Special Offer | Crystal Cruises

This sounds like a fun cruise – freezing your ass off in the Arctic, generating a massive CO2 footprint, and struggling through 10 foot thick ice behind an ice breaker – just so you can brag about global warming to your buddies.

    April 24, 2015 – Intrusion / eruption (?) event at Axial Seamount
There was a major seismic/deformation event at Axial Seamount on 23-24 April 2015. Thousands of earthquakes and sudden ground deformation (subsidence of 2.4 m over the first 3 days) were detected by the instruments on the OOI Cabled Array. The event definitely involved an intrusion of magma into the upper south rift zone (probably a dike), but it is not yet clear if there was also an eruption of lava onto the seafloor. Apparently, no lava was erupted in the summit caldera where the OOI cabled observatory instruments are located, because they all survived and there are no obvious temperature anomalies (yet). It’s still possible that lava erupted either north or south of the caldera along one of the rift zones, but we won’t know if that happened until a ship can get out there to look (probably not until late May at the earliest, but definitely by mid-July). Real-time seismic data from the OOI cabled observatory are being posted by William Wilcock here, and bottom pressure/tilt data are being posted here. There was an Axial Seamount science planning workshop 20-22 April in Seattle and the meeting web site has more information about this event. This is the event that we forecast last fall to occur sometime in 2015, so it’s very exciting that it actually happened! We will have an expedition to Axial in mid-August to repeat our campaign-style pressure measurements to update the time-series below.

Oregon’s Axial Seamount Underwater Volcano Erupts

…Axial Seamount, an underwater volcano located 300 miles west of Oregon, started to erupt on April 24. Scientists observed the phenomenon in real time through high-tech instruments costing $200 million installed by the University of Washington.

The eruption was preceded by 8,000 earthquakes and resulted in a drop in the seafloor by eight feet. The volcano is along the boundaries of the Pacific Plate and Juan de Fuca Plate, which are tectonic plates.

John Delaney, professor of oceanography at the University of Washington, said that while the underwater changes were taking place 300 miles away, the data reached them at the speed of light through the fibre-optic cable connected to Pacific City. In turn, the data was transmitted to the campus by Internet in milliseconds.

The 8,000 small earthquakes were spread over the past five months, which led Oregon State University geologist Bill Chadwick and University of North Carolina, Wilmington, professor Scott Nooner to predict in a blog post in autumn the eruption….

From the FAQ’s – and even here they can’t quite come clean and call the “escort ship” an icebreaker ……..merely it has “ice breaking capabilities” For the sake of all involved I hope that it’s “capabilities” are up to the job in hand !!

    3. Isn’t the Northwest Passage too full of ice to transit?

Crystal Serenity plans to transit during the period of when ice concentration is minimal. The typical conditions along the planned route during the Arctic summer are substantially free of ice. With these extremely low ice concentrations, keeping the ship well clear of ice is entirely feasible.

In addition, an escort vessel will accompany Crystal Serenity. The escort vessel will have ice breaking capabilities and would be able to assist in the extremely unlikely event that the ice concentration becomes a challenge for Crystal Serenity. Further, we will be working very closely with the Canadian Ice Services to monitor ice conditions to ensure they remain safe for transit.
