Every Day At Six

My two complaints about Columbia, MD were that they didn’t have a Whole Foods, and that I couldn’t find any pickup soccer.

They opened a Whole Foods last August, and I finally found a pickup soccer game this afternoon with a group of Mexicans. They said they play every day at six.

The only reason I found the game was because I was riding around trying to get my chain adjusted, after my fossil fuel powered thunderstorm disaster yesterday.

I’m thrilled to finally find a soccer game, just in time to move back to Colorado this week. Just more proof of climate chaos.

The last soccer game I participated in.

Ft. Devens MA. Decided to have a fun day for PT instead of the usual running, rucking, calisthenics, stretching, or during the winter cross country skiing.

So my team and another went to play soccer. The field was a good ways away so we drove. There was a new captain that had come to our company. His name was Flavin. Seemed like a good type and he wanted to play so we told him to come along. The drive over to the field passed through a residential area. Down by the road in a little turn off was a dumpster. I was riding with Woody, my teams weapons man. As we passed the dumpster we noticed a skunk acting strangely and Woody pulled off and we went to check it out.

That skunk had gotten his whole head stuck in a Yoplait yogurt cup. One of those with the top diameter smaller than the base. Woody and I looked at each other and just shook our heads and not a word passed between us as we got back in the car and drove on. There was just no way in hell to get that cup off that skunks head without getting sprayed.

So we arrive at the field and gather to pick up the teams and then up walks Capt. Flavin. You could not have gotten us to disperse more quickly if you had thrown a grenade in the middle of the crowd. Flavin had stopped and helped that skunk and gotten the cup off his head.

Maybe the Mexicans are moving north to escape the increasing heat? lol

A Mexican soccer game, especially a pickup game could turn into another twin peaks…

  6. What’s pick up soccer?

    • Random people playing in the park

      • NYC has pickup softball every sunday in central park. Different people every sunday, so nobody know each other’s names so they usually go by nationality. Put the puerto rican guy on 2nd, let the black guy pitch. Irish are called Mick, Dominicans are called Pappie, women are called Mamita, or people just use nick names.

  7. Steven Goddard stripped Al Gore of his cold weather powers. I’ve been watching the patterns for a while now. When Goddard says he thinks about coming back to Colorado, it cools by 10 degrees. Here’s what happens when he says he’s moving back:

I shudder thinking he comes back for good.

I used to play pickup basketball several times per week during college. There were always games going on in the evening at a couple of different courts near the University. We could always fill teams of 5 players, and usually we had another full team of 5 waiting to play the winners.

Years later I returned to find these courts a virtual ghost town. Usually they were completely empty, occasionally you might see 2 or 3 friends shooting the ball around, but the pickup games were nowhere to be seen. It’s really too bad, it was such a fun and healthy way to spend a few hours but I’ve still never found a regular game in the area.

Completely OT but too good not to share this story of service and sacrifice:
