Why the sudden drop in DMI sea ice. I have seen similar straight line drops at Cryosphere Today’s site that defy physics. To their credit they did rectify it after I emailed them.
I suspect it is a the inability of satellites to distinguish a surface melt pond from open oceans

Today’s DMI image looks like it came right back up, perhaps you are right about the satellites inability. Which begs one or several questions.
All that happened was that they missed a large slice of the sea ice somehow.

Eyeballing the sudden delta as 700,000 square km, I think as of tomorrow we can conservatively predict a snowball Earth by June 2017. And that isn’t taking into account the already existing ice cover in Antarctica, Greenland, etc.

The other possibility, (apart from not measuring a large chunk of the sea ice), is that they farmed the data out to a guy named Schmidt to work his data crunching on.
