Not the first time for the boat to not make it. Northabout made the NW passage in 2001, but failed to make the NE in 2004.

The sea ice is going nowhere without that help.
I think that they think that ice melts faster than what it does. The problem? It generally takes longer to melt than it does to accumulate, especially in places that remain cold all year. Bodies of water take a long time to warm up. It takes months for the Great Lakes to lose their ice – sometimes lasting to July. The Arctic would need much longer than its short summers.
Then there is what the painfully obvious that you pointed out. These people are suffering from delusions. They are convinced that “climate change is happening now” and the ice is supposed to be gone – in spite of their way being blocked by ice. They have listened to the lies for so long, they cannot believe the truth when it’s staring them in the face. This is true “climate change denial”.
With the AMO turning downwards and the sleepy Sun, this will probably be the last year for a few decades that there is even a vague chance of this circumnavigation.
Ice not gone = failed mission = continue later whilst still claiming victory for climate change awareness.
Ice gone = mission success = TOLD YA SO!!!
I so hate these moronic activists with an ax to grind, lamenting good news (i.e. the Arctic isn’t yet melted away) whilst hoping against all hope that mother nature cooperates with man’s follies.
Actually, the GOOD news for all the people that live up that way , would be for the Arctic sea ice levels to be greatly reduced, at least in summer.
Trying it back towards the norm of the first 3/4 of the Holocene.
But that doesn’t look like happening.
Been following this tragicomedy. The boat has a number of surprising minor problems. The keelbox that houses the swing up centerboard is leaking water and wetting the companionway. That indicates some structural problem below the waterline that developed underway. Hairline cracking from salt water corrosion of the aluminum is a candidate possibility. Sacraficial zinc anodes are notorious for being finicky. Would have hauled and fixed before setting out otherwise.
They took a rogue wave during yesterdays gale, and had leaks from several portholes that should not have. That means the porthole sealant has aged and gotten brittle–happens to all sailboats eventually. Both leaks suggest lack of basic maintenance checks.
The watermaker has failed. Likely a reverse osmosis desal type. Could be a number of things, but some require spare parts. Do they have them?
Expedition leader who chartered this Irish vessel is not a sailor. May have assumed the owners were taking maintenance care. But the last Arctic voyage of record was 2006, a decade ago. The captain is very experienced, but it is not his boat. His visual inspections and check of running gear and ship systems would not catch these issues.

Not so tiny. Bigger sailboats get exponentially more difficult to manage. Most ocean going sailboats are under 50 feet.
49 foot cutter rig. Ice strengthened aluminum hull, fully seaworthy. Has crossed the north Atlantic several times and done both the NWP and NEP previously. Sleeps 8 in 3 staterooms: 4 forward (upper/lower bunks each side) and 2/2 aft port and starboard. 86 hp Perkins diesel, separate generator, 2000 liters diesel fuel storage, two 8 hp outboard semirigid inflatable skiffs. They will also have a popup rescue capsule for 8 lashed to the deck or transom.

Jim Hunt, what difference does it make? The Vilkitsky Strait is full of ice as well. What’s more, even if they get through that there is a lot more ice on the other side.
No it isn’t Billy. There’s currently some ice and some open water.
Some ice? The ice in the Laptev Sea is at an impressive 5 year high.
Jim is probably a case in point for this post: he believes in NSIDC data.. and also disbelieves in it when you show something that proves him wrong.

I’m afraid the old war horse, Hempleman-Adams, is not capable of the “ultimate subtlety” needed to exercise Doublethink. Only a distinct evolutionary branch of homo sapiens have that ability: the progressives. I suspect he is not one.
Hempleman-Adams achieved feats before that would have been impossible without clear thinking. I believe he sees the contradictions of his situation but he can’t get out of it without paying a steep price he doesn’t think he can afford.
So he seems to do what many of us do in such irreconcilable conflict: He drinks.

Would be interesting to know where some of the fleet are now.
I bet one of them is heading towards the Laptev, Vilkitsky area on other duties, and the SOF III is trying to time it correctly.
According to other sources, one is transiting the Straight between Leptev Sea and Kara Sea at present (w-e, the opposite direction). Sort of a reverse help thing. But I don’t think Northabout is in position or shape to take advantage.

Thing is, if you look behind where this one has been, I’m not sure it would be all that much helpful for a small boat, and if the wind is blowing could easily be a sort of lure to a trap as the ice closes in from the sides.
It appears they will be in Russian waters, or at least close to Russian waters. Will they be depending on rescue from Russian “Coast Guard”?

Geran, they are in Russian waters now, with a Russian captain. That will remain so until they reach Alaska, their next port of call. USCG. Then the hairy part of the NWP is Canada, which will have icebreakers like Larsen on standby. The transit there has to be pre-registered. Dunno about Russia’s NEP
i have to question the rank stupidity of parents putting children in that environment. as much as i detest alarmists, i really hope this boat makes it out of the arctic in one piece with all crew safe and well regardless whether they make the transit or have to about turn.
On this occasion the parents are putting themselves “in that environment” too.

WOW , look at the massive increase since last year, PARTICULARLY in the Vilkitsky/Laptev region
You find with the white lefty liberal middle classes that in their own countries where the ply their left politics they are continuously warning the world of danger caused by capitalism. So in SE London where I live in the area of Dulwich you have had over the past twenty odd years the white middle classs lefty guardian reader types moving in in droves as they love the older Victorian properties. Most of them work in local government . the NHS, education and public services i.e. occupation funded by the state. In these positions they are totally complicit with H&S and AGW policies and practices. Where they bemoan all day log the dangers inherent in not complying with say legionella’s testing or ‘heat waves ‘ due to AGW. Yet all of them whenat home seem to put their kids in the craziest bicycle contraptions you will ever see with trailer with babies in hanging of the back of the parents bike driving in and out of lorries putting their kids at great risk . Bicycle deaths in London are horrendous yet these people think nothing of seething whilst reading their Guardian editorial on the imaginary plight of polar bears and then throwing their year old kids in a seat or trailer contraption and weaving in and out of very heavy vehicle traffic.
It really does represent a naïve hypocrisy of the greatest proportions. How old is Ben , the website says 14 yet apparently in his blog he says it was his birthday so has he just turned or is he now fifteen ? Now imagine if an employer had placed Ben in such dangerous conditions , the Guardian, the BBC and their ilk would be on the campaign trail against evil capitalism.

Inagine allowing a 14 year old to helm a 49 foot sailboot in force 6/7. I was a national champion collegiate sailor and never let my teenage kids alone near the helm of my 36 foot sloop. Even on autopilot. And tacking, I was always on the winches with them just in case. One overwrap mistake is disaster; one overwrap mistake with a finger mixed in means you lose the finger.
Was teaching them all along. Look at the mainsail. See that? Lets fix it by changing boom vang tension, luff downhaul, traveler position, leach line, whatever by one inch to change sail shape to just so optimum. Look at the jib leach luff. Lets fix by moving the slotting track forward one notch to increase leach sail tension. Feel the weather helm? That is wasting speed off the rudder by water vortices (turbulence). We want smooth laminar flow. Lets fix by easing off. We can estimate the speed gain versus distance loss optimum easing using the hull speed and heading instruments like so… (And once you know how to estimate it, you can learn to feel it like the Olympic smallboat sailors and I did, in their fingertips on the tiller.)
Now the very experienced captain surely knows all this stuff. None of those other yahoos do. They are slogging about in dangerous seasick ignorance. True sailors don’t get seasick.
