    The difference is that since 2009 the NW passage has had an entirely ice free route in nearly all years, allowing single season passage for ships without ice breaker assistance.

    There’s a massive qualitative difference between Amundsen’s time and now.

    Tony, can we have a “Ice Free Arctic” or “Northwest Passage” Celebration every October?!? You know, a bunch of climatologists could get together and throw a party. You could invite every sea captain and crew who navigated the NW Passage in the preceding year!!

    Maybe the President could set aside “Northwest Passage Day” for the day after Columbus Day or something. Wouldn’t that be great!
