At the 2007 Nobel Peace Prize ceremony, Al Gore said the world was spinning out of kilter, and predicted an ice-free Arctic by 2014. Since then, Arctic sea ice extent has increased.

A legend…in his own mind!
In reading the literature regarding the attempts to reach the North Pole, I was surprised to learn that the expeditions always began in the middle of winter. I thought that to be crazy, but the reason was that in the summer the ice was thin and broken by “leads”, which were essentially open water. So in the summer the ocean ice was not consistent enough for them to sled to the pole. In the winter, they still had problems with open leads, but it was feasible to negotiate them. Perry claims to have reached the North Pole in APRIL of 1909.
