In 2012, the winter maximum Arctic ice extent was high, and alarmists screamed that it meant nothing because the multi-year ice was disappearing.
This year NSIDC reports a large increase in multi-year ice, and alarmists are screaming that the winter maximum Arctic ice extent is “fifth lowest since 1979”
(While we are exploring the depths of their disordered minds, it should be pointed out that there is zero correlation between winter maximum and summer minimum over the past decade.)
there is zero correlation between winter maximum and summer minimum over the past decade
This is counterintuitive to me.
Compaction means thick ice and low maximum extent. Spreading means thin ice and high maximum extent.
For what it’s worth , I got hold of some Norsex data for every Mar and September for the past decade, put it into Excel and got
Y = 10,000,000sq km + 0.33X (Y = Mar max area; X = Sep Min area)
with R2 = 0.29. I’ll leave it for others to judge whether that is a good or bad correlation
R-square of 0.29 is a bad correlation. A good correlation would be much closer to R^2 = 1 (which would be a perfect correlation). Make a scatterplot of the data, and you will see.
I would make a very rough analogy with the “calories in = calories out” misnomer regarding metabolism. The body can ingest 1000 calories, but may metabolize those calories at 99% efficiency, or 60% efficiency, based on other factors (balance of digestive hormones, etc.) The rest, the body expends as body heat, or passes out as un- or partially metabolized.
Similarly, I would assume that sea ice waxing and waning is not directly proportional to global/seasonal temperature, because other factors are involved (the sun, the oceans, wind, etc.)
(Putting on my religious hat: the earth – nay, the universe – is a feedback system put into place by God, governed by forces far beyond our control, if not our comprehension. It is the height of arrogance to believe that we mere, pitifully impotent humans could have a lasting impact on that system.)
None of it is beyond our comprehension; that is the rock-solid faith of every true scientist.
I don’t think you really understand how this things works. Here’s a video to explain it better than I could put it into words: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8HUvTp8ZcJs
Climate alarmists are the kid, and you’re Rob Schneider
Yep… Each year they find a stat which fits their meme or just flat out lie…
